Holy bump Batman!!
Sorry for slow reply but i've only just seen the question. Either that or it's taken this long to cook up an answer!!!http://www.toonforum.co.uk/posting.php? ... 3&p=796940#
To be honest the last few years of Roker Park were a bit strange regarding crowds. Lets be straight at the outset and say every game wasn't a sell-out. The problem was the ground itself which was having it's capacity cut every season due to Health and Safety/Taylor Report etc.
The days of 76,000(official) and 80-90,000(unofficial) packed inside were a distant memory after the Roker End was half demolished overnight in the early 80's due to safety issues. It was later cut back again. Next up came Hillsborough which led to further numerical reductions and this continued right up to the end. No more money was being spent as we were heading to the SOL. The FA were quite lenient (re seats etc) by the end with Roker Park but only because we were moving. They weren't going to allow us to play there much longer without major changes.
So, people maybe saw crowds of 20,000 plus and thought the ground must be empty. The reality was, with away supporters and segregation this figure wasn't far from being "full" for home fans. I say "full" as physically there was still the same space, the capacity was a theoretical figure.

For the record i loved Roker Park. I loved the patina and general wear from 99 years of football matches. I loved it on night games. Roker Park was a special place for many. Most of the grounds have lost their unique character which identifies them with the team and that includes us.

As for the upturn in numbers. There are TWO major reason for this. Firstly, in the 80's football in general was at a very low ebb and so were attendances for all teams across the board. The euros changed this and there was a major upturn right across the leagues including Sunderland. We got the double boost by having the new stadium and this changed the make up of fans with more females/children attending to boost numbers. Our team had a decent period to which definitely helped but it'd be unfair and untrue to say the extra 20,000 appeared just because we won a few games.

Thought their current crest (not the shirt badge) came in in 1999?
Sorry I meant that their current badge hasn't changed, yet they don't use it on their shirts.

The kit is from 2006-2008. Although I can't figure out who the name is. Thought maybe FOWLER 9, although the letter after the O doesn't look like a W, but I guess there's a chance it's a custom print.

Having spent some time in Liverpool, I'd say it was taken in 2016

I'm sure he's just trolling us by being a reasonable decent man.

With Sunderland, I definitely get the feeling they hate us far more than our fans hate them.

Not necessarily because of newcastle's success, more because it came at a time sunderland were at a real low so we were literally world's apart. Up until that era and since there hasn't been a lot between the two clubs. There shouldn't really need to be a reason for envy nowadays but for some the Keegan era brings back nightmares. Ive continuously worked in bars and clubs in newcastle during and after so ive taken more than my share of piss taking. The first Reid era wins at SJP were long overdue for me and at last i could go to work and give a bit back.
As a youngish lad in an era of many beatings i never ever thought i'd see us win six in a row, never ever. Things tend to even themselves out though. Strangely, i actually think we've been "robbed" of a few other wins in recent years on the balance of play. I think you've got out of jail a couple of times with a draw.
That sounds about right, it's obvious by the "1992'er" craic that seems commonplace on Twitter and the SMB.

One question though, were all Sunderland fans before that era classed as "73'ers"? <scratch>
92'ers is still commonplace.
'73 is a long time ago but to be fair Sunderland were considered one of the "biggest" clubs not too long before that. Longest unbroken top flight run etc. "Bank of England Club" etc etc
I suppose it'd be fair to say we gained a good few fans after '73, or were they old ones just turning out again? We were still a second tier club but the next couple of years we were playing ok in the fight for promotion so understandably crowds would have risen a bit anyway.
I think it's fair to say '73 carried us over for a good few years to follow but i don't ever think we were in a glory hunter situation.

Newcastle's good era was over a longer period, with arguably better players and optimised media publicity. They were very well marketed by the club and significantly SKY. Due to our lowly position Sunderland missed out on the start of all this. No doubts newcastle were a fairly attractive proposition to neutrals though.

That's a bit of a stretch mind.
True, and even worse when you think how much money we've wasted in that time. I doubt there's a club in the land who've squandered as much as us and made correct decisions so few times.
Usually a period of 10 years in the top flight would allow for errors to be ironed out, but not at Sunderland. We're the only club to receive £100million and still end up deeper in the s**** and further down the league.
I'm not confident this time, you can only play Russian Roulette so many times before the gun goes bang. We pick up the occasional good result to raise hopes then go crashing back to earth again. Big Sam had us more consistent and stable.
