Thing is, while online socialising has become increasingly part of life, it's also become a much more sterile and paranoid environment than face to face ever was. If you're with your mates at the pub you can come out with some crass joke about George Michael the day he dies and get a couple of laughs because everyone there knows you're just having a joke. But online you're aware that a comment to your mates could even end up on the news, with your character being smeared as bigoted by thousands of losers on the internet who can't wait to join the tsunami of faux-moralism. Hell, the outrage could even pressure the police into investigating as has happened with tasteless jokes in the past. It's only a matter of time before this behaviour spreads out of the internet becomes the norm in general isn't it? Or at least until it gets so bad that loads of people want to change politics so much that they'll even vote in a leader who says all kinds of genuinely outrageous s*** without ge- oh. Good post, I actually burst out laughing at the bit bold.
As crass as it was I've come to miss the days when the death of a celebrity was an immediate opportunity to make tasteless jokes about them. I didn't hear a single one about George Michael despite there being plenty of easy material to work with, just excesses of cloying false-sentiment among people trying to portray themselves as more sympathetic and sensitive than everyone else in the mistaken belief that others would think more highly of them for it.
Attenborough will be widely mourned when he dies because the nature of his work is uncontroversial and almost universally adored, unlike creative artists whose work can be inspiring to some and obnoxious to others. He's also still a cornerstone of some of the BBC's finest content, unlike the ageing celebrities whose careers effectively ended decades ago. His longevity also appeals him to people of all ages, everyone grew up with Attenborough, he's been a household name for so long, a bit like Murray Walker but working in a field with broader appeal.
I think 2017 could be Stephen Hawking's year, if he survives next year rumours will surely abound that he's invincible.

Have you seen Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe? I can't read that last sentence without hearing it in either Brooker's or Shitpeas' voice. I think my favourite part last night was when Brooker described Donald Trump as looking like a cling-filmed pack of frankfurter meat that's been kicked through a yellow cobweb.skalpel wrote:Thing is, while online socialising has become increasingly part of life, it's also become a much more sterile and paranoid environment than face to face ever was. The internet used to have the opposite effect, because of its anonymity users were less inhibited and presumably it's still like this now on forums (I suspect there were no false outpourings of grief on not606 and I'm sure the YouTube comments were atrocious), but yeah it's the popularity of social networks in which users' names are attached to everything they post and have the potential to quickly go viral which makes everyone so cagey. Facebook's become almost a one-stop shop for many these days, with people relying on it for entertainment, gaming and world news rather than simply socialising (if you can call it socialising).

Day 3 in the house without heating and hot water.
Boiler is buggered, plumber been to see it and trying to get parts but lots of plumber merchants are shut.
I've got a god awful cold as well.

Women like that can f*** off. It's only "objectifying" when it suits them.

Tbh I knew she would b**** about it, kinda why I still posted it, she's always doing s*** like that, yet I've seen her objectifying men loads of times, she's a typical hypocrite feminist who doesn't hesitate baiting herself for victimisation.

If someone goes out with everything on show then they should expect people to look at them. If I walked around town with my knob out I wouldn't be outraged if people looked (and laughed).

People in relationships that combine their names.
A guy at my work called Liam is in a relationship which someone called Adam. They (and other people) refer to themselves on Facebook as 'Ladam'

I've got a mate who's done this with his missus. They have a "joint" Facebook account with both their names on it. What a throbber. Congrats on wearing the pants youthBodacious Benny wrote:People in relationships that combine their names.

I have a friend who tried to combine my wife's name with mine and during a dinner party he tried to make everyone around the table use it.Bodacious Benny wrote:People in relationships that combine their names.

I took him to one side and reminded him that as I knew so many embarrassing stories involving him that he should stop.
It worked.
