Because his earning potential will be much, much lower? Quite telling that many of the most expensive signings are from Brazil/South America where rates of poverty are high - they probably do care more about money than football.Chappy wrote:Of course it is... but why not go at the end of your career? Because it really is an absolutely outrageous amount of money. I don't see why he wouldn't just wait until the end of the season, it's not like that offers going anywhere.

Greed.
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.

Seems Slaven the manager differs somewhat from Slaven the player;

WBA apparently bidding £10m for Livermore from Hull.
£10m seems to be the going rate for a bang average midfielder / player.

Marseille playing West Ham at their own game. Just had a second bid for Payet rejected of £20m, a whole £1m more than their first bid.

People debating the money offered by Chinese clubs and players prioritizing it...let's be real here, it's just a sport. Sure, we love that sport, it's so many people's greatest passion, but it's hard to take a moral high horse position about players needing to care more about the level of competition they face, as if sporting legacy is such a noble cause.
It's easy for us all to say we'd only care about playing in the best leagues when it's not our job, and all of their wages are greater than what we make - but the fact is, it's a job, and a game, and clubs will have no shame in ridding themselves of a player the moment they have no use for them, and we as fans will either forget a player, or criticize them the second they have no use to us. There are plenty of reasons to care about your footballing career beyond "playing at the highest level", and judging players against that is often narrow-sighted and naive.

It's their greatest passion for most players... and no matter what they'll still be playing football for a living. Unless it was playing for Newcastle or a huge club like Barca I'd 100% go for the money.I'm over Colo wrote:People debating the money offered by Chinese clubs and players prioritizing it...let's be real here, it's just a sport. If Sunderland knocked on my door tomorrow and offered me even £50k a year to play up front for them, of course I would. And I'd try my hardest to score in every game aswell, derbies included. If you say you wouldn't you'd be lying (unless you earn more in your current job, in which case I hate you).
Everyone's career is motivated by money. We all strive to get better in order to make more money to afford a better standard of living. Footballers are no different, it's just on a different level to what we comprehend.

If Sunderland offered £50k a year and Newcastle offered £40k a year I'd choose Newcastle being a Newcastle fan. Some things are more important than just money.

I'd go to Sunderland, they'd be paying me to rot in the reserves so I might as well get the extra cash.

Would I get goal bonuses and get to retain my image rights?Heisen wrote:If Sunderland knocked on my door tomorrow and offered me even £50k a year to play up front for them, of course I would.
