Random Rubbish Players You Really Liked
Re: Random Rubbish Players You Really Liked
Santon was probably our third best LB of the PL era, behind Enrique and Beresford. I think the reason he was hated was more for fact he never fulfilled his considerable potential more than anything else.
In the year we finished 16th he was probably our player of the season, although that isn't saying much.

Olivier Bernard is infront of Enrique for me, and I can't really remember Beresford.Heisen wrote:Santon was probably our third best LB of the PL era, behind Enrique and Beresford. Even his mum wouldn't have loved him for what he did for us on the pitch.MultipleJesuses wrote:No love for Babayaro

What? Enrique was f***ing Maldini compared to himColly wrote:He was no worse defensively than Enrique, I'm genuinely shocked when people say Santon was rubbish.Duke wrote:
He was shocking! Awful defender and didn't really make up for it going forward. One trick pony and his one trick of cutting onto his right and putting in a s**** cross or shot wasn't great.
I dunno

I think I remember him scoring on his debut for us? Against Coventry in the FA Cup. Made me think he was gonna be the world's best player.Donkey Toon wrote:Even his mum wouldn't have loved him for what he did for us on the pitch.MultipleJesuses wrote:No love for Babayaro

Enrique is one of those players that people remember as a lot better than he actually was.

Going back a bit I would say Shaka Hislop. I went to see Newcastle at their old training ground in Durham and Shaka let me take a penalty against him. Ginola gave me £20 as well for scoring.

Agreed. He was a genuine candidate for our worst 11 of all time in that relegation season. Absolutely shocking.ALF wrote:Enrique is one of those players that people remember as a lot better than he actually was.
He was great in the Championship but so was everyone. The season back up he was decent as well but it was more the Enrique/Jonas link up that was good rather than the individual players.
Also it helps he was part of that Championship / first season back up team. They're rightly fondly remembered as a team and as a result so are the individuals.

Yanga-Mbiwa.
Still think he could have turned out to be a decent player for us.

He was our player of the year . He got a move to Liverpool for a reason. He's easily the best left back we've had in my time as a fan.ALF wrote:Enrique is one of those players that people remember as a lot better than he actually was.

This. I think we can add Mbemba to this list when he inevitably leaves too (since this thread is becoming less and less about actual 'rubbish' players).Juliet Papa Golf wrote:Yanga-Mbiwa.

On MYM and Mbmeba though, it's as if we don't know how to use ball playing CB's properly.
Re: Random Rubbish Players You Really Liked
He moved to a mid table Liverpool and struggled to get into their team. When was he player of the year exactly?Duke wrote:He was our player of the year . He got a move to Liverpool for a reason. He was here for 4 seasons. His first 2 seasons he was in and out of the side despite us not having another left back. N'Zogbia and Duff were preferred to him. In the Championship he was class, no arguing that. Then the next year he was good but hardly set the league alight. We sold him for £7m. 6 months after we sold Carroll to the same club for £35m.
Re: Random Rubbish Players You Really Liked
I'd imagine he was player of the year in the fictional world where Colo was always s*** and didn't actually make the league team of the season two years running (albeit one in the Championship).
He was decent enough but Santon for him was as like for like a swap as Janmaat for Debuchy.

Actually he done very well when he first moved to Liverpool. N'Zogbia and Duff were preferred to him when he had only joined the club.ALF wrote:He moved to a mid table Liverpool and struggled to get into their team. When was he player of the year exactly?Duke wrote:
