Match day thread - Brentford v NUFC
Brentford (a)
(From nufc.com)
United return to Championship action this afternoon, facing the Bees in a 3pm kick-off at Griffin Park.
This game was selected for live TV on Monday January 16th. However, our FA Cup Third Round replay against Birmingham City on Wednesday January 18th takes precedence, meaning that the TV coverage is cancelled and it reverts to Saturday.
After a 3-1 home victory in October, United have their first chance to register a league win double in the current season - something they managed on ten occasions in the 2009/10 Championship campaign.
Newcastle were allocated 1,660 tickets in the Brook Road Stand behind one goal - the same end we occupied for our most recent visit here in 1992.
That consists of 600 seats in the upper tier and a standing terrace of 1,000 places at pitch level. These are now sold out.
Where: Griffin Park TW8 0NT (12,763)
Nearest railway station: Brentford (0.3 miles)
(Kew Bridge also nearby)
Nearest tube station: South Ealing (1 mile)
(Northfields also nearby)
Return mileage from SJP: 582 miles
There are no relevant tube closures on Saturday and nothing in the way of strike action planned .
This could be our fifth and last visit to Griffin Park, now that a new 20,000 seat stadium on a site two miles to the east near to Kew Bridge has been approved.
Team: Jonjo Shelvey serves the last of his five game suspension while Mo Diame, Christian Atsu and Chancel Mbemba are all away at the African Cup of Nations.
Ayoze Perez should return following a calf strain while Sammy Ameobi and Jamie Sterry trained with the first team this week, after returning from loan spells at Bolton Wanderers and Coventry City respectively.
The injury that saw Aleksandar Mitrovic stretchered off during the FA Cup tie at Birmingham City isn't too serious, but he won't be involved.
Assuming he plays, Jamaal Lascelles will complete a half-century of competitive senior appearances for Newcastle since his debut in a League Cup home tie against Northampton Town in August 2015.
Stats:
Magpies @ Griffin Park - all-time:
1992/93 won 2-1 Kelly, G.Peacock
1947/48 lost 0-1
1938/39 won 2-0 (FA) Clifton, Mooney

1947/48 lost 0-1
1938/39 won 2-0 (FA) Clifton, Mooney
1934/35 lost 0-3
Full record v Brentford:
BFC: It remains to be seen whether top scorer Scott Hogan (responsible for 14 of Brentford's 32 league goals this season including the one at SJP) faces Newcastle, as his future remains uncertain.
The Bees have won just one of their last seven home Championship fixture, losing to Barnsley, Fulham and Birmingham City and drawing with Wigan, Cardiff and Norwich. That sole success came against Burton.
Referee: Chris Kavanagh - Lancashire-based whistler appointed to his third Newcastle game this season, after a 1-1 draw at Villa and 2-1 victory at Preston.

Their star striker has been subject of bids from West Ham and might not feature.

I've put a bet on us to win.
Re: Match day thread - Brentford v NUFC
Brentford is awful. Non of the pubs are open and they don't open until 11am. Absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Match day thread - Brentford v NUFC
I was at the home match against Brentford and I don't recall seeing a more in control, laid back performance. That said, it was Shelvey that pulled the strings that day. Still, I don't see anyone in the Brentford squad that could trouble us so 2-0 United.

Draw wouldn't be bad.

Re: Match day thread - Brentford v NUFC
Another pessimistic prediction from me again I'm afraid. I think we'll lose this one as I think they'll be too physical for us.
Kindly deeds done for free!
