Watch this space. It is quite possible that nothing will happen and Newcastle simply continue under Mike Ashley’s ownership but senior club sources acknowledge that there has been discreet interest from assorted parties in recent months. If – and it is only an if – a takeover does happen, expect it to be as sudden and unexpected as Manchester City’s switch to Emirati control.
Possible buyers? Well, the state of Qatar is reportedly weighing up purchasing a Premier League club and rumours of Chinese interest refuse to disappear. Ashley would demand a high price, and is sufficiently contrary to suddenly decide to keep the club, but purchasers are attracted by those 52,000 crowds, Newcastle’s international reach – the former chairman Freddy Shepherd may have exaggerated slightly when he once claimed his was the world’s eighth most popular team but the club are undeniably high profile – their rare city-centre location in a regional capital and, of course, the transformative presence of Benítez.

Somewhat out of leftfield, I remain skeptical, surely Qataris would prefer a South East Club. link to article

Can't see it, a lot of journalists seem to be stirring a bit about us at the minute.

I would not say no, assuming they were of the Man City variety of owner rather than the Forest or Blackburn sort.

Takeover talk and talk of 'will Rafa stay' within 24 hours of promotion. The media certainly try their best to find stories

When the "face f***ed by horse cock" looking journo starts off her article with a question like "Why did it take so long to confirm promotion?" you just know she's stirring.

I don't believe it for a second, but if i was given the choice id rather have Qatari owners, they would be more likely to treat us like a fantasy football team imo, Chinese owners seem to be pretty dodgy and seem to have a record of running clubs poorly.

Re: Louise Taylor pushing takeover angle
But how many of the former can there realistically be? I mean, I know there are a lot of very rich families there, but only so many of them have the ties to national industries that benefit from global awareness. At the end of the day, there may be a lot of very rich people in the world, but there's only a limited number willing to spend (and lose) that much money on a football club. Then on top of that you need one who is competent enough to run it successfully - and as a host of mounting examples are showing, those are few and far between.Don Sholeone wrote:I don't believe it for a second, but if i was given the choice id rather have Qatari owners, they would be more likely to treat us like a fantasy football team imo, Chinese owners seem to be pretty dodgy and seem to have a record of running clubs poorly.

Re China the government there is getting stricter on currency controls, don't want their super rich taking cash out of the country, or worse emigrating. But they seem to turn a blind eye to football.I'm over Colo wrote:But how many of the former can there realistically be? Add on football seems to be lax in vetting owners, I suggest it's a good way to wash funds to buy a club and sell it a few years later at a slight loss

Seems as though that blind eye regarding football has more so been in respect to spending exorbitant sums on domestic clubs, and there haven't been too many huge spending owners of clubs outside of China. May only be a matter of time though, but it's the management and decision making I'm more concerned about - here's looking at you Trillion Trophy Asia (BCFC).Colback's Orange Tufts wrote:Re China the government there is getting stricter on currency controls, don't want their super rich taking cash out of the country, or worse emigrating.
