Match day thread - NUFC v Stoke

Post by Toondes » Sat Sep 16, 2017 6:56 am

As always , a huge thanks to NUFC.com

2017/18:
Stoke City (h)

Newcastle go in search of a third successive league victory - and clean sheet - at Gallowgate this afternoon in an old-fashioned 3pm kick-off.

A small number of seats remain on public sale.

Having missed Sunday's victory at Swansea City on medical advice, Rafa Benitez has now returned to Tyneside and will be back in the dugout at SJP.

NUFC: Aleksandar Mitrovic serves the second of his three match suspension, while Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara remain unavailable.
Chancel Mbemba is back in training.

SCFC: Ryan Shawcross is doubtful and Geoff Cameron won't travel.

Beginning with a 0-1 loss at Everton, Stoke beat Arsenal by the same score at home before playing out a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion. They drew 2-2 at home to Manchester United last Saturday.

Mark Hughes saw his side end last season by winning 1-0 at Southampton, but the Potters had managed to collect just five away points from a possible 24 before that game - a run that including six successive nil returns in front of goal.

Referee: Stuart Attwell - the Warwickshire whistler took charge of us once last season, the 1-2 loss at Sheffield Wednesday.

Previous to that, Attwell was in the middle for a 1-5 defeat at Crystal Palace in November 2015 and a 2-0 League Cup win at Manchester City a year earlier.

We've failed to find a game at SJP that he's reffed.

Travel: There's no service in either direction between Tynemouth and St. James' on Saturday or Sunday. A replacement bus 900 calls at all affected stations.

Roads around SJP will be traffic free for 20 minutes either side of the final whistle, with barriers closed at these junctions:

Strawberry Place/Leazes Park Road
Strawberry Place/Barrack Road
Strawberry Place/St James Street
Strawberry Lane

Leazes Terrace will also be traffic-free for the same period, additionally closing from 2pm.

There's a Newcastle United Food Bank collection at the stall on Strawberry Place from 12.30pm, with the following items on their wish list:

Cereal, pasta, pasta sauces, rice, sugar, UHT milk, long life fruit juice, tinned goods (tomatoes, fish, vegetables, meat, rice pudding, fruit), tea bags, instant coffee, biscuits/snack bars.

If you aren't able to bring items, cash collection tins will be available at the stall and donations are most welcome. You can also donate in other ways here

Here's Martin Hardy's piece about the Food bank, written this week to coincide with Isaac Hayden making his second visit there online here

Really good test of where we stand I think, positive result today and I'll actually begin to think we can have an ok season.

Definitely. Stoke are a solid mid-table team which is where we're aiming for the next season or two. They've had good results against Arsenal and Man U lately, and a point away at WBA too (usually a bogey ground for them). Jese and Shaqiri will pose threats to us going forward so the defence need to be on it today.

I'd like to see Shelvey, Yedlin and Atsu start, with Manquillo, Hayden and Murphy on the bench.

Forgot Yedlin was back, like to see him come in as well then. Shelvey can stay on the bench or come in for Perez. Hayden had a bad game last time out but I think if we change Merino to a pure DM it will hold him back a bit. He's got more to him than Shelvey in that deeper role at this level.

Would like to see us really press and hassle them today. They have some really good technical players and if we allow them too much time and space we could be punished. Hopefully Merino will continue to impress and I'd maybe stick Atsu in to give us a little extra on the counter.
There is no sin except stupidity.

Whenever we press we play well and often get a good result. When we don't we are utter s*** and, more often than not, get trounced. The solution seems obvious to me...

Need to take advantage of the confidence and optimism the last 2 games have brought us, especially given the start we made to the season. There'll be times during the season where we struggle for momentum so picking up points in games like today will come in handy ;)

I'd like to see us try Shelvey and Merino in the middle to give us a bit more attacking emphasis, have Shelvey directing things from deep and let merino have his occasional bursts forward but I think we're going to see Hayden and Merino again, maybe not the right game to try out something new. Yedlin for Manquillo and Atsu for Murphy would do for me

Tricky one with Merino. I'd like to see him further forward as he can make things happen. But at the same time his work rate in midfield and putting in tackles is invaluable.

I didn't watch any of our wins live so I won't Stream this to prove that I have the power to make us lose by watching the game

Tbf to Mbemba he was one of our best players v West Ham.

Rafa loves to rotate so on a game by game basis he'll make changes based on the opponent. Might have thought that Stoke are strong on the wings so Mbemba could handle the winger better.

If we keep Diouf and Pieters quiet then we'll give ourselves a good chance. Against Man Utd they did the same thing for pretty much every single attack. Fletcher got the ball in space and then hoofed a long ball to Diouf to cross in.
