Didn't see that one coming, hope he does well. Always really liked him as a player, and think he could have the right mindset for management. Glad to see he's not one of those old pro's who walked into a top level job. Although Derby is hardly a bad place to start.

Frank Lampard has been confirmed as the new manager of Derby County, signing a three-year deal with the Sky Bet Championship club.

Derby had been searching for a new manager following the departure of Gary Rowett to Championship rivals Stoke last week and have opted for the 39-year-old in what is his first managerial role.

"I've always wanted to manage a club with a big tradition and history like Derby County, so this is a huge opportunity," said Lampard, in a statement released on the club's website.

"I have spent considerable time discussing the role and the club's objectives with the chairman and board members.

"We want to build on the club's top six finish in the Championship last season, while at the same time bringing through some of the excellent youth and Academy talent we have at Pride Park.

"This is my first job as a manager, but I've worked closely with some of the best coaches in the game and I'm confident in my own abilities and those of the team around me, including the board.

"I know it won't be easy - managing a football team never is - but I'm really looking forward to the challenge ahead."

Jody Morris, who has led Chelsea's U18s to the FA Youth Cup in successive seasons, is expected to join Lampard as part of his coaching staff at Pride Park.

The former Chelsea, West Ham and England midfielder was interviewed twice by Ipswich earlier this summer, but the Tractor Boys opted to appoint Paul Hurst as their new manager.

Lampard - capped 106 times by England - enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League.

Derby executive chairman Mel Morris says Lampard was the "stand-out" candidate for the vacant role at Pride Park.

"I'm delighted to have someone of Frank's calibre as our new manager," said Morris. "I've always been an admirer of Frank both as a player and a person, especially in the way he conducts himself both on and off the pitch.

"That impression was only reinforced when we interviewed him for this role, his passion and humility shone through in equal measure. The board were unanimous that he was the stand-out applicant with many highly desirable and unique capabilities.

"Few players have achieved what Frank has in his career to date. He's a winner, a leader who knows what it takes to succeed and who has the character and charisma to be a fantastic manager for us."

Derby ended the 2017/18 campaign in sixth place, but failed to gain promotion via the play-offs, losing to Fulham in the semi-finals.

Lampard's former England team-mate Steven Gerrard also took his first step into first-team management this month, becoming the new boss of Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

I like the way he speaks as a pundit, I know that doesn’t mean anything in management but I would actually like to see him and this new crop of newly retired players do well in management so we can start breaking the tired carousel of Moyes, Allardyce etc.

Plus Lampard > Gerrard as a player and will fight anyone who disagrees.

I'd say both him and Gerrard have walked into massive jobs, Derby and Rangers are hardly nobodies, they should be earning their stripes in the lower leagues like Kevin Nolan, the only reason they have those jobs is purely down to their reputation as players. It's quite pathetic and laughable really.

I do think he has the potential to become a decent manager, but Derby is definitely a big job. They'll be expected to finish in the play-offs next season and if he fails to deliver that then they'll get rid of him. They've shown over the last couple of years that they're more than happy to chop and change managers.

I'll watch his progress with interest and I like him on TV and he comes across really well. Hopefully he does okay.

Re: Gerrard I'm not entirely sure what he's got to gain from taking the Rangers job. At very very best he'll keep them around where they are now (second or third) and there's very little he'll be able to do to close the massive chasm to Celtic.

Italian teams are always giving former players etc a chance, and not just teams in the Serie B, big teams like AC Milan. I don’t have a problem with it, they have to start somewhere and they can’t all start in League 2.

The problem though is we have a long list of poor English managers who are always given opportunities no matter what, they have failed time and time again but they all get top jobs, none of them have to earn their stripes, football culture in England is completely different to everywhere else, having an English passport and a familiar face is enough to get a good managerial job, why are the likes of Lampard and Gerrard not learning as assistants under successful managers or gaining experience in the lower leagues, it's no secret that we are way behind in quality of coaching and handing out jobs in this manner isn't going to solve the problem

I think there's a fair argument that a name like Lampard can attract better players than a Kevin Nolan to allow him to start slightly higher (it's not as if he's gone straight in at Chelsea). Didn't do us any harm with Keegan...

And he also worked under better managers than Nolan too so that gives him another advantage

Plus he's apparently taking Jody Morris with him whose supposedly doing great things with Chelsea's youth.

Yes I'm aware there's an apparently and a supposedly in that sentence...

People moan about the influx of Managers from abroad, but to my mind they make (most) British Managers look lazy and complacent - There's a clique of the old under achievers and never achieved who somehow stay on the merry-go-round - Pulis, Allardyce, Pardew, Hughes, Moyes etc) - despite only being able to offer mediocrity at best, and players like Lampard and Gerrard who walk into jobs because of their playing reputation (willing to give them both the benefit of the doubt for the mo, we'll see what happens but they could both end up as Sherwoods) .. there seems to be an expectation that playing in Britain makes you automatically a potentially great Manager, and very few venture abroad (Woy being a noteable exeption), and very few are massively successful (Fergie excepted, obviously!)
In contrast, a lot of the Managers from abroad immerse themselves in the football cultures of two, three, four, sometime countries , moving themselves and their families , and as a result speak two or three languages, so naturally have so much more insight into the mindsets of the continental players that are filling the Premier League.
In the entire history of British Football, I think you'd struggle to come up with more than a very small handful of Managers that you can name that have travelled across Europe or the World and made a name for themselves in each country they've Managed. Sir Bobby is the only one that immediately springs to mind that really achieved in all the countries he Managed.

If earning stripes at lower leagues doesn't do anything for the managers at that level, why should it mean anything for former players who are getting opportunities in the Championship or Scotland? People get hired into good companies all the time without having to work up through the ranks of low level businesses, it really isn't all that different.

I'm not suggesting all former star players are going to become good managers, but they are the aspiring managers who have first hand experience with the world's best coaches, in the best competitions, on the biggest stages, and generally proven they have the mentality to handle those pressures. It makes sense that they're then given the benefit of the doubt to step into a bigger job that managers who have no exposure to any of those things. Is it fair? I'm not sure, but it can be explained.
