Cover versions

Post by Mifune » Tue Feb 21, 2012 10:57 pm

90% of the time the original is the best, but some of the time a cover version of a song can supersede the original.

What covers do you find are better than the original? Here are some of mine to start off with.

Hallelujah - Original: Leonard Cohen (although the cover is more a cover of John Cale's cover) - Cover: Jeff Buckley

All Along The Watchtower - Original: Bob Dylan - Cover: Jimi Hendrix

Hurt - Original: Nine Inch Nails - Cover: Johnny Cash (Pretty much all of his covers on his American albums are amazing)

The Man Who Sold The World - Original: David Bowie - Cover: Nirvana

Mad World - Original: Tears for Fears - Cover: Gary Jules

I agree with everyone except maybe Nirvana, but thats still a great version and i've a minor obsession with Bowie. Jeff Buckley in particular, Grace was a great album.

Heres my two cents anyway:

This was the Isley Brothers originally

Was Fleetwood Mac's

Was Slades, possibly the greatest cover i've ever heard

100% agree with Hurt by Jonny Cash. Nine Inch Nails wrote a great song, Cash perfected it.

I say this with great apologies to the genius Krzysztof Komeda:

This mellotron band took your Rosemarys Baby theme tune and turned it into perfection.

Hurt and All Along the Watchtower are brilliant covers. Also like Cash's cover of Personal Jesus, but wouldn't say it's better than the original. I prefer Warpaint's version of Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie:

I love Pete Doherty and Keane's cover of Karma Chameleon just because of how s*** it is and how uncomfortable they look.

Sinnerman - one of many traditional songs Nina Simone covered.

Cream's version of Crossroads is pretty good too.

The Cancer Bats cover of Sabotage (by the Beastie Boys) is a personal favourite but not to everyone's tastes " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A ska cover of Hotel California, it is trully amazing. " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . On that theme Reel Big Fish's cover of 'Take on Me' or It Must be Love by Madness. Yes I have a massive blind spot for ska covers!

I like Marilyn Manson's cover for comedy purposes, mainly as I thought the original version was a bit silly and Manson ran with that.

I considered Crossroads but then the OP said it had to be better than the original. I think the original RJ's are untouchable personally, no matter how great that Cream cover is.

Actually turns this into a good piece of music. Adding more Dolphy to anything usually makes it great though <gent>.

Great choice! <applause>

This isn't better than the original but can show what happens when covers go wrong...

Got 25 seconds into that, would've been 18 but I kept fumbling the mouse in desperation. :(

Like a seahorse in the night, he rides with haste to his beloved's domain.

He is the silent guardian, the practical idealist, the man of peace prepared for war.

He is a Mackem.
