Atrophy - The protagonist starts the game strong, ends the game weak. Rather than engagements arbitrarily upscaling to ridiculous levels and/or enemies becoming roided up bullet sponges to increase difficulty, the player weakens throughout the game and has to deal with this. They might be able to fight groups of enemies face-to-face early on, but as they lose power the focus becomes more on survival, avoiding combat, stealth and outwitting the enemy. This could also be tied in to the player's playstyle, using powerful abilities could take a chunk of power away, or carrying more weight increases their rate of attrition.
This is a fantastic idea. Seems a much more organic way of increasing difficulty and keeping the gameplay fresh as it progresses. So many ways of implementing it as well. They could take physical damage, lose weapons or start with a finite amount of ammo which can't be refreshed as the game goes on, or simply just become fatigued as a result of being awake and active for 25 hours.
