To be fair, I'm sure fans in most countries outside of England have been griping about the money spent by PL clubs. Obviously England has an illustrious footballing history compared to China, but I only mean to say that crazy football money is relative and globalization impacts more than just manufacturing jobs.TBC wrote:I just think this has a different feel to when Russia were making moves a few years back, it's certainly on a much bigger scale.
I have this awful thought of the majority of the worlds best players playing over there in like 20 years. A proper financial system would stop this current madness but FIFA are more interested in ruining the World Cup.

Some news report said that China wants to win the world cup (they've got a long way to go, they got beat by Syria in the last WC qualifiers ) - hence all this money. I understand splashing on top foreign players to generate some interest, but surely they should be spending more a grass root level?

China has managed to become powers in a lot of sports nobody would have imagined a couple years ago, and it's been through exorbitant investment and cut-throat training methods. But as for the wild investment in domestic and overseas clubs rather than grassroots investment, it'd really seem that rich and powerful Chinese men are looking for short term means to getting in the good graces of the president, and investments in grassroots coaching and training won't offer a fast enough return to impressing him.Chappy wrote:Some news report said that China wants to win the world cup (they've got a long way to go, they got beat by Syria in the last WC qualifiers ) - hence all this money. Cheslea were linked with N'Zonzi too. He's done well in Spain but £25m is a joke.

I wondered if anyone would make that comparison, I think all of the top leagues in Europe have their time. Look at our league as a brand now compared to how it was in the 80s, and in comparison the Italian Serie A now compared to the 90s. The difference is Europe remains the hub of football, that doesn't change.I'm over Colo wrote:To be fair, I'm sure fans in most countries outside of England have been griping about the money spent by PL clubs. If the best players in the world went to China it would be a huge culture shock to everyone. Imagine having to stay up until 2am to watch the best teams play, or only getting to see them live when they tour Europe during preseason.

Tbf unless you pay for a sports subscription you can hardly ever watch the world's best players live on TV anyway. Other than the fa cup there's nothing on terrestrial TV apart from highlights.

By live I meant actually in the stadium. If they're all in China the opportunities would be few and far between.

As funny as Defoe going to west ham would be they would probably still scrape survival somehow especially after palace, hull and swansea have all just sacked managers in the last few weeks the mackems sticking with Moyes stinks of them staying up again by some luck of god.
They looked so bad this season as well, especially in their first 10 games

Everton sign Ademola Lookman for £7.5m. A player who is behind Armstrong in the England pecking order has just joined a Premier League club for £7.5m.

Ironically, a month or two ago and everyone was saying how they'd rebound upon firing him, trying to make the comparison to past managerial hirings and firings there. No matter what they do, everyone assumes they'll scrape survival - but I see why they've gained that reputation now.Graw wrote:As funny as Defoe going to west ham would be they would probably still scrape survival somehow especially after palace, hull and swansea have all just sacked managers in the last few weeks the mackems sticking with Moyes stinks of them staying up again by some luck of god.

Yup, since its all they fecking do is barely scrape by I refuse to believe they'll go down until the points prove it.I'm over Colo wrote:Ironically, a month or two ago and everyone was saying how they'd rebound upon firing him, trying to make the comparison to past managerial hirings and firings there. Im having a look around on RTG its absolutely hilarious atm, the majority seem to think they should be getting anywhere from £30-60m for him I get the whole 'price of relegation' argument but they actually think West Ham will play that for a 34 yo DefoeAldridge Prior wrote:sunderland-value-defoe-at-near-to-£15m.1315817/

It's not about what West ham would pay but defoe's value to Sunderland. Given he's their only real goal outlet I think he's easily worth that given the money differential between the Pl and championshipGraw wrote:Yeah.. You're right, it's 2 different questions - how much is he worth to Sunderland? how much is he worth to every other club? Definitely more to Sunderland, but they have to reconcile that no club would ever pay what he's worth to them - yet the folks there always seem to talk asking prices as if they would/should.Colback's Orange Tufts wrote:It's not about what West ham would pay but defoe's value to Sunderland. Thats what I mean by the price of relegation, however no team will pay Sunderland the price of relegation for a 34 yo Defoe. Re: Other Clubs' Transfer Rumours/Deals (Summer 16/17)
He's worth £100m+ to them. It would be one of the worst footballing decisions of all time if they sell him for any price in this transfer window. There is no replacement available in Sunderland market (or the market if most Premier League clubs) who will have the same goal return as him.
With Defoe there is a fair chance that they stay up. Without him they almost certainly go down. If they do stay up it'll be because of Defoe and Pickford. Those two are vital to them. Especially giving their financial troubles and the poor management from Short, they definitely can't afford relegation.
