On the left and right of the screen is pretty much dead space (on my laptop) anyway, so putting advertisements on that wouldn't bother me what so ever, even when I am already a member.
I also believe that you get more money for your advertisements if your click rate is high, so you could have an advertisement "thread" where the more frequent posters just quickly go on and click on the advertisements, therefore raising more money for simply clicking on something.
The reason I say do it this was is that for every time someone goes onto your website you will probably only get 1 ad click in say 300 people accessing the site, meaning your click rate is really low, meaning hardly no money at all, but if we get people to go on a certain page just to click on your advertisements, then your click rate would be a lot higher and therefore more money (I hope this makes sense).
However, if your just doing it to get more people to join, could you not do a "pop up" for the guests every time they open a thread, then they may get fed up of the pop ups and join up...
