I would say that we should be better than most clubs in the league - with the squad we finished last season with, but you have to take into account Pardew isn't a manage that is willing to make do, and make the best of anything he is afforded to him. He'll always essentially be running at 70% capabilities, where as someone like Laudrup or Moyes of Everton can get up to 80,90%.

Also take into account Simpson has left, and Perch, the direct cover for Debuchy after the latter's departure has now gone; thus meaning you can add a right back to the recruitment list. Combine that with a left winger, two forward players, and any other players to balance out the trimming of dead wood.

Heading into the season in this shape, granted we're not going to be ploughing course to January with these numbers or bodies - but in my view, with this manager running coaching this side, we are as far away as ever from matching the fans ambitions.
Man of few words I see.

Paulinho has probably never heard of Assou-Ekotto, or Scott Parker, or Kyle walker, or Michael Dawson or many others!

Assou-Ekotto <awe> what I love about players like him and Zlatan is that they are openly honest about everything and admit they go where the highest offer is - none of this Robbie Keane cobblers of "I've always loved the club"

Why should he?

He's previously said words to the effect he's of no interest in football, other than it being a profession to him. If he doesn't watch Brazil play, he's never played against him, doesn't play football manager, or doesn't read papers - how would he know who he is?

How has everyone here heard of him? I first heard Tim Vickery talk about him on BBC world football phone in, came to personal knowledge with him on FM, then watched him play against Chelsea, England and in Confeds. All the while whilst reading and listening to rumor on his transfer.
I wasn't really having a go, in fact I find his honesty pretty refreshing. <ok> I just find it funny because not many would have the balls to say that publicly.

He has shown time and time again that he isn't better than last season. 5th was a freak result, which won't happen again with Pardew. Pardew does well for 12-18 month until he inputs all his footballing philosophies than it is all down hill.
This. 5th was a freak result, and to the other extent 16th was at the wider end of a spectrum of expected and acceptable performance. Therefore Pardew's true abilities lie somewhere in the middle - I think that's anywhere between 9th and 20th. I don't believe 16th was a fluke, and it was certainly a true reflection of how Pardew set that side up, - I just tried to use the supposed word 'irregardless', clearly I meant 'regardless' - of injuries, Europa League or any other half baked excuse.

Therefore, if Pardew is going to be sacked sooner or later - it's near inevitable. If there is a projected class ceiling upon his abilities as a manager, and that glass ceiling is around 8th/9th, add to the fact that there are simply six or so clear better squads in this league than us, he would have to be performing at his upper limits to finish in the top 10, and thus at an acceptable level.

The natural flutuations of performance during the course of a season would surely see him go through a bad run of form, and be sacked - simply because the peaks of performance are only going to be tipping satisfactory standards (8th, 9th), yet the troughs of performance are going to see us residing where we finished last season.
I have hope. Perhaps I'm just an optimist, and whilst I know fifth is out of the equation, I think we should be aiming for top 8. We have a fantastic starting XI, and with a full pre-season under their belt the January acquisitions should look better next year.

The key areas for me are:
*Keeping Ben Arfa fit
*Utilising Sissoko effectively
*Adding a good left forward
*Keeping a settled back four
*Scoring more from set pieces

Teams on average score between 7-15 goals a season from set pieces, this is the one major area we need to be focusing on during pre-season. 15 goals a year from set plays is probably enough to jump a couple of positions up the league table. Whether Pardew realises all of the above and works on this is another matter - I've always said Pardew is a manager that relies on defensive stability and moments of magic to win games, this really needs to change. We have a very attacking squad - Pardew needs to learn this.

He's also never been able to have this season, as he usually leaves or is sacked in the s*** season that follows (someone can prove me wrong if I'm wrong). Now the cycle is broken, it'll be interesting to see how it goes.
I'm definitely inclined to see how he does in a 3rd season with a club, he has always seemed to fall off a cliff on the second season and then end up being sacked, if he can't change the philosophy and get us to play attractive football then i want him gone. 2 and a half years to implement his own style and players and the football has never been worse than it was last season.
