I hope he's more charismatic in the dressing room than in interviews <laugh>

(His interview is at the beginning of the podcast)

I think it's common for people to confuse correlation for causation between performance and captaincy. Similarly fans have been quick to judge players' performance while being captain after one or two appearances, when they were already inconsistent players before wearing the band. Realistically, Lascelles good form at the end of the season was relatively brief, and he's still a young player, so I think it would be unfair to him to assume his performance through 2 matches is because of the captaincy - and I hope people are understanding that he isn't yet going to be 100% consistent. That said, he also needs to play well to keep his spot in the line-up, and that does illustrate the importance of a captain you are nearly certain they're in the XI when healthy.

Not disagreeing with you by the way , we are only two games in. Players are still finding their feet ect.
It's not (just) Lascelles work rate though. He doesn't shy away from criticism of others or himself, he tries to set a high standard when too many other players are in denial or coast along
Yeah this.

Also he noticeably organises the defence etc on the pitch and is always communicating.

Surely though Lascelles' trademark from last year of bemoaning his senior pros looks a bit silly when he's the one underperforming, I'd much rather have a leader by example than a mouth.

I expressed my concern about his lack of experience (as player, never mind captain) on the previous page, but it's still far too early to judge. He is starting to look a bit Tiote though, where he assumes the armband gives him magical powers to beat players rather than clearing it as he would have previously...

The only real headache that Rafa has with this is that he can't easily drop Lascelles and play Mbemba & Hanley (dropping your captain isn't the done thing).

Still think that Lascelles will do well, we've only played two matches.

The lad definitely has the attributes but I think the captaincy has effected his game and hes not as focused as he can be, made a fair few errors in the first 2 games and unfortunately some have lead to goals, hopefully he adapts soon.

Think he's felt the pressure a little bit. Hopefully he grows into it but he needs to improve quickly.

Silly to judge him now but he needs to start improving or he'll find himself dropped imo. He hasn't been bad but he switches off and he's cost us two goal already .

Can't judge after two games when most people have been pretty poor.

Even if he isn't the best defender, he's the best candidate for club captain. He's got plenty to prove still on the pitch but by the sounds of it he's the best leader on and especially off of it.
And from the sounds of things, that's all true, and why even if I still want to see consistent CB play from him before having a clear opinion of him, he sounds like an exciting pick for captain and I'm proud of him for embodying the role in such a short time at the club.
Have to agree with this even though I thought he was too young <applause>

Lascelles won't peak for another five years, so seeing glimpses of what he can do last season bodes very well.
