Our net spend might be -£14m but we sold 2 players for £55m in summer 2017. His net spend is completely irrelevant. He's still spent over £100m in 2 seasons and not got a team that lives up to that price.
£25m of that was on Gayle and Ritchie, without both of whom it could be argued that we'd have struggled to gain automatic promotion last season. Whatever you think of them, spending £100m to replace the likes of Townsend, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Janmaat (all PL quality players) isn't going to get you very far. So net spend is completely relevant in my opinion, we can't build a PL team on the cheap.
There is absolutely no argument about it, they were solid signings and fulfilled their purpose. Had Rafa been given the same level of control last summer to the one before I’m certain Gayle wouldn’t even be here and we’d have someone better leading the line.

We had 10 outfield players (minus Rafa’s signings) by the end of summer of 2016. And then we spent iirc £90m replacing almost an entire squad

Ashley could argue that exact thing...

Why am I having to give you £15m for a striker when you have a £13m one that you've barely used?
And Rafa could say 'it wasn't me that spent £13m on him'.

I'm not absolving Rafa of any blame as I'd rather we didn't sign anyone that sign someone like Manquillo, and Diame shouldn't be starting as many games as he does. But clearly Rafa hasn't been allowed to sign the calibre of player he wants (and we need), our transfer spend under Rafa is something like minus £14m which is ridiculous.

It's that daft thing where everyone points to net spend on transfer fees, forgetting that these players still have to be paid. You can't sell 2 players for £55m and sign 5 players to replace them with that, unless the replacements are being paid peanuts. We've a squad full of bang average signings who'll be on decent wages, plus the likes of Lazaar who'll be back in the summer since he's not good enough to start for one of the worst sides in Serie A history, and Colback rotting in the reserves. We need a director of football to sort this shambles, and I never thought I'd be saying that...

Also, hardly a way to convince somebody to invest when you're not using the players bought with the money invested in the summer.

'Pushing On' is what we should have done yesterday after beating Stoke away. Swansea are probably the worst side in the league on paper and we couldn't beat them at home. We also couldn't beat Brighton at home previously and yesterday WBA who can't hit a barn door either usually comfortably beat them 2-0. The amount of points we've dropped against the likes of Bournemouth, Brighton, Huddersfield, Watford etc. is ridiculous.

Yesterday I thought we set up right but wasteful finishing has yet again cost us. It's the players to blame for that. Whoever owns the club come the end of Jan, if we don't get a decent striker in to put away the easy chances that Gayle and Perez missed yesterday then we'll be lucky to stay up.

Hopefully Bournemouth and Stoke both get pummeled v Arsenal and Man U.

Good performance, bad result. Literally, a better striker would have got us 3 points.

Disappointing result even after a decent run over Christmas as we should be beating teams around us especially at home (we need to address our home form asap). I'm not getting too carried away as a win today would have had us in 11th, and as frustrating as it was, I'd much rather having a team creating and missing than not creating at all.

Respect the point, I guess.

I guess the truth of it is that most of our team put their best in today, Diame worked his socks off, even Gayle attempted to get it done. They are just not a very talented group of players. You cant blame them for being crap when they give their best I suppose, you can blame the ownership though for not investing in better players though.

I think that the work ethic of most of our side will help us a lot in the relegation battle to come, the players seem to genuinely care. I think we will survive, all bit it by the skin of our teeth

Also, Diame the dopey f***er with that handball. Don't care how 'well' he might have played, that was f***ing stupid and could have f***ed us.

Just watched MOTD, Gayle - have a bit of f***ing conviction man. That's why he's not a PL striker. We'd have been 2-0 up in the first half today if we'd bought someone decent. So annoying. Yet again created the chances to win and yet again didn't have the players to take them.

He's better than Gayle. At least he puts a bit of effort in.

We desperately need a striker though. We wasted far too many chances today. Any average premier league striker would have bagged a couple.
