I remember a guy at my school who ate as many cream eggs as he could to raise money for children in need or comic relief. Can't remember what the final number was but he was also chucking his guts up afterwards <laugh>
Those marshmallow chicks (Peeps) will do a number on your stomach too if you get gutsy in a competition.

Same here. I'd forgotten they were a thing in all honesty.

I don't understand why every football club doesn't adopt the negative net spend strategy if it doesn't have any correlative affect on performance. Seems as if it would be a great thing to do. Should get on to all the owners about this; every team in the league could make a tidy profit!

Gross spend alone doesn't account for the fact we were starting from a poorer position than other teams, like Brighton, in 2016/17. We had finished 3rd bottom the previous year, they had finished 3rd top indicating we were at a similar level. We then sold many players, leaving us with 11 outfield players in our 25 man squad at the start of the season (minus Rafa's signings). Brighton, and every other team, were starting from a position of 20-25 outfield players. It's pure manipulation to not factor in net spend given our gross spend alone would obviously be higher than Brighton's since we literally wouldn't be able to field a starting XI and bench.

And even then your own summer spend figures don't live up to your "spent more than double" claims.

The January window is still going and wasn't even included in your original comment and you completely ignored the promotion season and total spent figures.

I can only assume that the total lack of honesty in your reply indicates that you sub-consciously know you are talking s***.
Watch any transfer show / read any transfer news and you'll see net spend mentioned. If you sell a striker worth £10m and replace him with a striker worth £10m you haven't strengthened you've just replaced like for like. You have to take both incomings and outgoings into account when assessing transfer activity and the strength of a squad.

I apologise that the more than double comment was slightly incorrect. I didn't check the figures at the time as I knew it was roughly about that. I'll change that comment to almost double. The point still stands though, Brighton and Huddersfield have done more to stregthen their squads than we have.

I'm aware the January transfer window is still going but unfortunately my crystal ball isn't working so I can only consider transfer activity that has already happened and not what may or may not happen later today.

I dont know what the promotion season has to do with any of this. I was making a point about how Brighton and Huddersfield have done more to strengthen their squads than us since being promoted. An undeniable fact.

Also our net spend in the promotion season was around minus £30m anyway, I can't be bothered to look up Brighton and Huddersfields transfers for it because I don't really care and it's completely irrelevant to the point anyway. However I'd imagine they both had a higher net spend than ours.

It's marginal. Last season Brighton finished 1 point behind us an in the summer spent more than double what we did on strengthening their squad. Huddersfield finished 9 points behind us and again spent more than double what we did strengthening their squad.

If we spent the sort of money Brighton and Huddersfield have spent we would be fine. Unfortunately that is the Ashley effect, we can't even compete with Huddersfield Town anymore. Laughable if it wasn't so depressing.
Utter rubbish. NUFC spent £36.2m in the summer (not including what we subsequently spent making the Merino deal permanent). Huddersfield spent £39.5m (barely more) and Brighton £55.7m (about half as much again).

But during the promotion season NUFC spent £55m, Brighton £4.2m and Huddersfield £2.5m. Totals over last 3 windows; NUFC £91.2m, Brighton £59.9m, Huddersfield £42m.

But don't let facts get in the way of your anti-Ashley pro-Rafa agenda.
Summer transfer window:
Newcastle Net Spend - £23.7m
Brighton Net Spend - £39.65m
Huddersfield Net Spend - £38.9m
January (current) transfer window:
Newcastle Net Spend - £0
Brighton Net Spend - £14.9m
Huddersfield Net Spend - £10.83m
Since Rafa has joined the club we've had a net spend of minus £18m. He's lost more value from the squad than he's been allowed to bring in.

I'd say that on paper Brighton, Huddersfield and Swansea have worse squads than us, so if we finish 4th bottom then Rafa will have gotten us to finish where we should be. Wouldn't say it would be magnificent as I firmly believe there are 3 worse sides than us, but a good outcome.

Rafa hasn't helped himself with a lot of his transfer business though. Joselu, Manquillo, Murphy, Gamez, Lazaar, Hanley, Sels and Diame have all been shockingly bad signings. Lejeune and Merino haven't exactly been amazing although Merino could certainly turn out to be a great player.

On top of that, a lot of the players who were key last season needed to be shifted and weren't i.e Gayle and Ritchie
