Out of all those keepers you listed I don’t regard any as world class <laugh>

See: Everyone deciding David de Gea was s***.
I'm still on the fence on that one.
Every top regarded keeper definitely seems to have had blunders followed by purple patches followed by howlers. Then, some of them manage to retain their places into their mid 30s and beyond and everyone regards them as world class (Schwarzer, Friedel, Howard. Given, Van Der Sar).

I do think that young keepers get judged a bit more harshly than their outfield counterparts. One mistake from a young keeper and it has big consequences and puts the keeper straight into the spotlight (for the wrong reasons). Generally an outfield player can make a mistake, and even if it's something big like conceding a penalty it quickly gets forgotten. Whereas the next time the keeper plays everyone is on edge.
Completely agree, and maybe more than any other position, experience is especially important for keepers. The jump from the type of play and athleticism they face as keepers in academies to top level football is huge, and mistakes are inevitable.

I wouldn't go that far. Sterry I think will make his way down the leagues fairly quickly (he's 23 already), and I'm not convinced Roberts is up to standard. Of this current crop of "nearly old enough"s Woodman has the best chance, and I'd like to see more of Longstaff, but generally our academy is poor. Sorensen of course could be interesting to keep an eye on while he's on loan though.
Even then - Woodman made some bad flaps against Blackburn. I know he'd have less aerial balls to deal with in the League, and other top keepers have started that way, but he should be looking to close that off as a base.

With Longstaff - I guess the thing we want is to see him breaking up play and confidently retaining possession in midfield against more challenging opposition, so that we know he'd sit as a solid alternative to a Diame or Shelvey who are often injured. Shelvey is 27 next month, Ki is 30 in 3 days and Diame is already past 30...I'm pleased if there's another Centre mid on the books who is young, reliable and capable.

Away at Chelsea on his debut doesn't qualify?

Edit: agree re Woodman though, I wasn't impressed with him in the Blackburn game.

Having a run of games is definitely good for his development too, is that 3 in a row that he's started? He's presumably in line to start v Watford in the Cup on Saturday too.

He's done very well. In style he's very similar to Carrick, just a no frills central midfielder who'll retain possession and keep play ticking over.

It's nice to think if we go down there's a few decent prospects finally beginning to emerge from the academy.

Longstaff has done really well. Was arguably one of our better players in his league debut against Chelsea, ditto Blackburn and again vs Cardiff.

I'm already putting him ahead of Hayden in the pecking order because he out played him in all three games. And Diame and Ki should be upping their game if they want to guarantee their places ahead of him, which is as it should be, competition for places and all that.

I think it's encouraging that he's stepped straight into a pretty poor PL side and not looked out of place. Away at Chelsea last week he didn't look like a novice or a weak link, same in the Cup. I only saw highlights of the Cardiff match but again seemed to help keep things ticking over nicely.

He's a young academy "graduate" called up due to injuries, he's scored a goal (in the cup, granted) and is an all round solid midfielder. I think Rashford and similar have overinflated people's expectations for young players.

What do you want from him? He's come in to replace first teamers and has barely put a foot wrong. Saturday saw good positional awareness which contributed to our clean sheet, some good strong tackles in midfield, and on more than one occasion was happy to get forward alongside Rondon to actually stretch the defense. He's doing well enough for me.

Am I the only person not getting carried away on Longstaff?

He hasn't really done anything *that* impressive yet...He may be good enough, but he hasn't really been tested as far as I am concerned...

True! I’d fine any professional player who hits the first man when taking a corner. It’d be like me working in an office and not being able to send an email.
What's an email?
Think 'virtual' carrier pigeon.

I need to bring the mrs to more games, haven't been to a game with her and we've lost.
