I don't think tactical naivety is reason enough not to give someone the job. He is still a media darling despite his obvious failures this season and is generally thought of as a brilliant manager. It's not necessarily what I want, but I think he'd be a good fit for England manager.
Rightly or wrongly though, I can see people saying they need a manager to "has experience managing the egos of top players", which Southgate avoided because he'd coached them at the younger level(s). Which isn't me defending that justification, just that it's a common trope thrown out by pundits when the time for a new national team manager rolls around.
