An element of our fans would still hate Bruce if we finished top 4, I've no doubt about that. Some people are sat primed and waiting for any small slip or comment that they don't quite like. The one that sticks in my head was when he made a joke in a press conference last season about not seeing a match as he'd be having Sunday Dinner with his wife, the amount of fans who leapt on that like he'd said he wanted to murder their Gran was ridiculous. I do feel for him in instances such as that and it's completely OTT by an element of our d******* fans.
It's true that when we have a fully fit squad to choose from we've generally done okay or quite well (e.g. the final quarter of last season), and Bruce does seem like the type of manager who the players like and benefit from the arm around them approach. The main problem for me is that there is never a Plan B. If we have one or two injuries we go from being not a bad side to being a terrible side, or if the formation we start a match with doesn't work there's no in game reactiveness to change it. I'm also not a fan of how he always tries to play down expectations to the bare minimum.
But all in all, he is the perfect Ashley manager. 12th and 13th is superb for Ashley, and over those two seasons our net spend isn't exactly massive so that's everything he wants in a manager, and the cherry on the cake is that Bruce won't challenge the owner. I'm expecting the same type of season again, we'll go on a few good runs and some awful ones but ultimately finish around 13th.
