There was a brief spell a long time ago where one of the Caldwell's had a run of games for us and looked alright.
Both played for us during their youth career, but only Steven played any senior matches, while Gary went out on loan several times before moving to Hibs.

Gary Caldwell = lump of wood.
Cannot believe he played at a level never mind tried to then talk about it 🤣
I do think his brother Steven had a mind for the game. He's embedded in football over here in Toronto though, doing loads of MLS and Canadian national team commentary and some front office and coaching work.

No doubt if he was in Portugal then one of our moron fans would have spotted him at the airport and filmed themselves shouting "Bruce, where's your bacon" at him...

I saw rumours of his holiday on twitter, but some journo pointed out the photo matched an image from two years ago.

I don't like how he's performing as a coach, but this seems like a smear

The never ending cycle of Bruce!

Fair play to him for getting a week or so in Portugal. Not like most of our squad are still here as they're not internationals and not as if you know, the actually need coaching as they look clueless most games!

Amid reports that Steve Bruce is spending the international break holidaying in Portugal, claims that his contract ends in 2023 were repeated in the local press.

For what it's worth, we understand that a recent piece in The Times detailing his contractual situation as follows is accurate:

"Bruce has three years left on his contract as a result of the rolling deal he signed when he joined in 2019. Each summer the length of the deal is automatically renewed and extended to its original length.

"There is also a clause in his deal that guarantees him a hefty compensation deal of about £4m* if the club decide they want to change manager."

I still don't think Ashley cares if a manager "challenges him". He's generally detached from the club, busy with other business, doesn't engage with the media, and has thick enough skin to deal with the support despising him for over a decade. What difference does a complaining manager make for him? Water off a fat duck's back.

There is definitely a he's not Rafa brigade despite matching Rafa and with what some claim is the worst Newcastle United team ever in terms of quality.

An element of our fans would still hate Bruce if we finished top 4, I've no doubt about that. Some people are sat primed and waiting for any small slip or comment that they don't quite like. The one that sticks in my head was when he made a joke in a press conference last season about not seeing a match as he'd be having Sunday Dinner with his wife, the amount of fans who leapt on that like he'd said he wanted to murder their Gran was ridiculous. I do feel for him in instances such as that and it's completely OTT by an element of our d******* fans.

It's true that when we have a fully fit squad to choose from we've generally done okay or quite well (e.g. the final quarter of last season), and Bruce does seem like the type of manager who the players like and benefit from the arm around them approach. The main problem for me is that there is never a Plan B. If we have one or two injuries we go from being not a bad side to being a terrible side, or if the formation we start a match with doesn't work there's no in game reactiveness to change it. I'm also not a fan of how he always tries to play down expectations to the bare minimum.

But all in all, he is the perfect Ashley manager. 12th and 13th is superb for Ashley, and over those two seasons our net spend isn't exactly massive so that's everything he wants in a manager, and the cherry on the cake is that Bruce won't challenge the owner. I'm expecting the same type of season again, we'll go on a few good runs and some awful ones but ultimately finish around 13th.

Tbh and I've said this a few times, I don't actually think Bruce has done as bad a job as people think he has.

We've finished 13th and 12th in his two seasons which is kind of our level at the moment, I agree he probably isn't the man to help us improve on that but of course a lot of that comes down to Ashley too.

Bruce got a lot of criticism last season some merited but some was just wrong, when we had everyone fit we done quite well, the bad period last season coincided with half of our team being out with Covid.
This. well said. <applause>

Apparently it's a rolling three year deal that has been activated, rather than an actual extension. I'm not sure that makes an entire amount of difference, but I think it protects the club against excessive compensation going forward if they (or a new regime) decided to remove him. Automatically extends a year after the seasons ends assuming certain conditions are met - I'd guess 17th > - but any break clause wouldn't be for the full three years, just for that season.
