I fully understand that Lascelles will be a casualty of the grand new vision of Newcastle going forward, I'm not personally ready for him to go just yet. I think he's cracking, form has definitely slipped over the last few years, and he is not the future. I don't know why, but I like him. He's a good Captain, and I'm a fan. For me it stems from a defeat at Goodison park in the last relegation season, my first visit there (shithole). Think it was a 3-1 loss, I vividly remember him towards the end of game all but dragging more senior players up by their bootstraps to at least look like they were interested. Could've been what, 22-23 at the time? Was proper impressed by that. Benitez made him captain the following season, and I think that was expected and warmly welcomed by most. Plus, I love the alleged story that he got in a scrap with Diame, calling the latter a lazy f***er or whatever, and I seem to (perhaps wrongly) recall Diame's form massively improving after the fact. Obviously shouldn't condone that kind of the behaviour in the work place, but it's a special case in many ways. Plus I'd love to be able do that myself at times haha.

If he was to go this summer though, I think Notts Forest would be a nice little story, if they wanted him and he was interested. He's a leader, and a solid premier league level defender, got nearly 200 appearances with us all competitions now. I confess to not knowing how good their squad is, and certainly don't know anything about their centrebacks. I can't say he'd definitely improve their defence because of this, but I'd like to think he would. And should he go, I'd wish him well. Yeah, sometimes a scapegoat - sometimes rightfully ripped, he definitely has more than one clanger in him. But for me a good player, a good servant, and a cracking captain.

Good post. I agree that he took on a leadership role and did well from a young age and at a difficult time, not an easy thing to do and lots of players would have (and did) run and hide but he stepped up. He was a key figure in getting us back to the PL and to keeping us in the PL when we came back up, the season we finished p10 under Rafa he was excellent (and rightly touted for an England call-up based on form). Whilst he has plateaued and had some challenges in the last couple of seasons (who hasn't!) I'd have no objection to keeping him at the club as 3rd or 4th choice CB but it depends on what his ambitions are. Off the pitch he seems like a very good pro and decent guy, but at 28 it might be the case that he wants to be playing week in week out.

I think whether he wants to stay as a squad player or move on that he's earned the right to choose and I'm sure there would be some interest in him.

I think it's totally reasonable to say that no club deserves those spots, but I do enjoy seeing some of those familiar clubs reappear after a long hiatus from the league. Plus, it's always good to have clubs to cheer against.

To be honest I just get wound up by people who think the traditional "big clubs" have some good given right to be in the PL . No, Wednesday, Forest, Sunderland, Oldham, Notts County etc have been s**** for years and deserve to be where they are, football is a meritocracy and if the new money has pushed them out then so be it.

Forest back in the PL after 23 years, Cooper has done a phenomenal job there.

Wonder if we can flog them some of our deadwood, some like Hayden would be decent for them I think.
Annoyed they are back. Twatty fanbase and have the classic big club "we deserve to be in the Prem because we have lots of fans and are massive and won some stuff 40 f***ing years ago" mentality.

Or maybe I just have an irrational hatred of them from the 606 days <laugh>

Hayden is a good shout, could be an option for Lascelles too if we were to ship him out this summer.

Wonder if Bournemouth would still take Ritchie.

Oh I've no doubt nothing will happen, both UEFA and FIFA have no care whatsoever for actual football fans.
They should form an allegiance with Sky Sports and BT Sports <urgh>

Your last sentence there made me chuckle <roll>

Giving money back would be an alien concept to UEFA.

Personally I'm just tired of the accountability falling at the door of one entity. We all saw what happened at Wembley, we have all seen when happened with the pitch invasions recently. The level of trust in supporters is very low right now. Yeah the majority didn't do anything wrong, but reporting it like there weren't masses of unticketed fans, ignoring fans all over social media gloating and posting pictures about getting in for free, posting up fake tickets etc. doesn't help the situation at all. There has to be a balance and I feel a lot of the reporting isn't being balanced, how can you tell people what they have just seen didn't happen?

Yes the police got a lot wrong last night as did the organisation but that doesn't excuse certain behaviours from some fans either. Painting these people as blameless just encourages more scenes like last night.
I don't condone the behaviour of those jumping barriers or knowingly buying fake tickets in any way, but I can't grasp the logic of football fans blaming another clubs fans for issues. We of all people should know that a fanbase isn't just a blob of humanity with the same opinions, morals or anything else. I know full well some of our supporters are knobs and if we ever get to an event like this we'll have plenty travelling without tickets hoping to get in.

Why is it the organisers fault? The bare minimum I should expect is for the organisers of any event, be it sporting, music or whatever, is to be able to work out who should and shouldn't be there and let the right ones in safely. Why on earth should a crowd of thousands (many of which are opportunistic locals) be expected to self police themselves? Why weren't ticket checks taking place before the neutral areas where fans were held for hours? Criticise the clear minority who shouldn't have been there all you want, but as a football fan with a ticket I shouldn't have to endure hours outside a ground without water or toilets, even to the extent of missing a game I've spent a fortune to get to. UEFA should be compensating each and every person impacted by yesterday's events.

Agreed - there should be acknowledgment of fault on both sides.

Looks like the French please have a lot to answer for.

Also UEFA have questions to answer. Initially they blamed the late arrival of fans, it was then confirmed by journalists and fans that this wasn't true and it was taking over 2 hours to get in despite arriving early. UEFA then changed thier mind and decided it was because fans had purchased thousands of fake tickets which weren't working at turnstiles. Again though if that's true it's solely UEFAs fault. All they have to do is require you to enter your name and passport/ID number or the name and passport/ID number of the person you're buying the ticket for at the point of purchase. Then only allow entry on the day if the person has a ticket matching thier ID. That would completely kill the 2nd hand ticket market and stop fans unknowingly purchasing fakes.

Though from the videos I've seen and the fan accounts on social media it looks like over the top security procedures (probably an overreaction from UEFA to what happend at Wembly in the Euros) and heavy handed policing are the main factors.

Clearly it's a combination of piss poor organisation by UEFA and police on a power trip enjoying thier big day out. However rather than holding their hands up and saying we got it wrong and we'll learn from this, they instead have to find anyone or anything to blame but themselves, shifting blame towards fans despite the vast majority of them doing nothing wrong.

AHH ok so it was the French running and jumping the fence <roll>
Also absolutely ridiculous that they had strict security protocols at such a high profile event, they should have just opened up everything and let everyone in at once. It would have been fine. <fist>
