Result….. that’ll do. Keeps the momentum and we’re still in the competition.
Hopefully get back to the required sharpness and kick on, big possibilities and lots of optimism for 2023

I thought we looked ok, beyond the expected rust thought we controlled the game, could have had a couple more goals if the team sharpness was back, first game back for the first 11 though so was always going to have some bits to pick at.

Wilson and Schar both back in the squad tonight. Not sure who’s starting yet.

Definitely strongest possible team. We’ve got 6 days rest after this until Leicester so get players who’ll be playing that game playing competitive football again.

Hopefully can get into a good position early-ish and then second half can rotate a bit.

Took me most of yesterday but found a bar in Funchal showing the game, whether I get to watch it is a different matter!

Newcastle return to competitive action tonight (Tuesday) after an enforced 38 day fixture break due to the World Cup Finals.

Their League Cup Fourth Round home tie has a 7.45pm kick-off but goes ahead 24 hours earlier than originally advertised. That change was required after industrial action affecting ambulance and medical cover on the 21st was confirmed.

The tie is a sell-out and an outcome must be achieved on the night - if the scores are level after 90 minutes then it will go straight to a penalty shootout.

The winners will take their place in the Quarter Final of the competition, which is scheduled to be played in the week commencing January 9th 2023.

Were United to progress that tie would fall between a Saturday evening FA Cup trip to Sheffield Wednesday on the 6th and the Premier League Sunday visit of Fulham to SJP on the 15th.

The Quarter Final draw will take place on Thursday night after the conclusion of the Manchester City versus Liverpool tie, which is televised live on Sky.

PS: Let's just remind ourselves that Eddie Howe's side are unbeaten in 11 league and cup games and have lost just once in their last 19 competitive outings, 17 of which were this season.

The Magpies are unbeaten in their last ten fixtures at SJP.

Team: Following Saturday's friendly win there's an injury doubt over Allan Saint-Maximin but Callum Wilson is available to face his former employer.

Alexander Isak remains unavailable but the absence of a clutch of senior players from the Vallecano game doesn't look to have been directly related to availability.

There's a reunion with one of his former clubs for Eddie Howe, along with various members of his staff including assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones.

Ryan Fraser, Wilson and Matt Ritchie also previously played at Dean Court.

Coral rate this tie as follows:

Outcome after 90 minutes:
NUFC win 1/3
NUFC win 1-0 13/2
NUFC win from behind 15/2
Any draw 13/4
0-0 draw 12/1
AFCB win 11/2

AFCB: Our opponents travelled to Dubai for warm weather training during the PL break but didn't play any friendlies.

Their most recent on-pitch action was a 3-0 PL home win over Everton on November 12th - continuing a run of form in front of goal that saw them net a dozen times in their last four league and cup outings.

There are injury doubts over David Brook, Lloyd Kelly and Norberto Nero while the availability of Chris Mepham and Kieffer Moore is tbc after World Cup duty.

This is Bournemouth's first game since a takeover spearheaded by US businessman Bill Foley, who will take over as Chairman.

The Cherries made it through to this round thanks to a 4-1 home success against Everton in the Third Round.

Their League Cup campaign began in August, when previous boss Scott Parker oversaw a penalty shootout victory over Norwich after a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road.

Parker has since been succeeded by Gary O'Neill, who as a player was in the same Portsmouth squad as Eddie Howe.

Initially appointed on an interim basis, O'Neill took the job on a permanent basis in late November.

Referee: Peter Bankes - second game of the season in charge of Newcastle for the Lancashire whistler, following the 1-1 Premier League draw at Wolves.
