Have to say of all the things you can accuse Longstaff of, lack of effort and stamina isn't one. Even late on Wednesday he was still making runs into the box (again something we've been lacking recently), almost getting picked our by a Hall cross and he's the one overlapping Osula on that Krafth clip.
Because he's really fit now, he was struggling though a few years back, here saying how Ritchie helped him see a psychologist...

Longstaff said: “I was miserable, to be fair. In training… Can I swear? I was a bit of a t** and I wasn’t nice to be around and he eventually saw that.

“Some people just let you drift away, but he was one who pulled me back and he said, ‘Longy, you need to sort it out’. He texted me and said, ‘You need to speak to this guy and speak to him now’."

'Longy' <laugh>

The last match we were at was the spurs 2-3 just after the takeover fat Bruce's last game in charge, after 20 minutes longstaff was bent forward with hands on his knees breathless, I said to Mrs foggy that feckers not fit! , he was only i think 23 then, seriously despite Bruce being clueless it was his responsibility as a pro footballer to keep his fitness levels to premier league standards.... A few weeks later when Eddie on his first day had them all at the training ground at 7.30am there was some photos in the Ronnie Gill of them turning up that early, and two players stood out as being more disgruntled than the rest.... Longstaff and shelvey, both with faces like thunder, two words, bone idle!
I think numerous players have come out and said they weren’t fit under Bruce due to lack of training tbf.
He's the one that stood out that day plus as I said despite Bruce clearly not training them properly because he'd been instructed by the FCB to leave us rock bottom, players can do extra training if they feel they're not fit enough, with the right application to want to improve. So anyway the point is I think he can be a bit lazy if left to his own devices.

I think he does well but shouldn't be allowed into the final third of the pitch <laugh>

Does that mean we can win the league if we keep Longstaff out of their final third and Bruno out of ours?
I think you’ve cracked it!

Love everything about this. The pinch to win it, the bit of skill, the pass. What a guy.

Love that , bit of a Toon swagger on Krafth with that surging run.
He’s a good one imo despite his misfortune with injury and limited game time what with Tripps previously and Tono ahead of him.
Good to have him 100% again, essential squad player at a minimum.

I'll forgive his wayward finishing as he at least comes onto the ball in dangerous positions often enough a few still go in. But it's abysmal passing that really holds him back in my books. I'll admit he breaks up play in our half okay, and doesn't make stupid passes near our box, but it's how cheaply he gives the ball away in the opposition's half that play seems to break down a lot more when he's on the field.
very frustrating, and worse that he never learns from his mitakes, keeps doing it, makes me wonder what hes worth now i think he was only 22 when we scared solskjaer off with a £50m price tag. haha spelt mistakes wrong <disgrace>

never been my cup of tea like, misplaced passes, losing possession, wayward shots into row z.....apart from that he's ok.

Do we have anyone in the squad (Schar and maybe Trippier aside) who can shoot from any kind of distance? Gordon and Barnes both have that cut in edge of the box curler, but not a single one of our centre mids can hit a long ranger. Tonali hit a decent-ish one yesterday but it wasn't on the highlights so not sure how close it was, but it certainly had a lot more power than a Bruno floater.
babyface hall has a decent shot on him like, unfortunately they're always blocked but one day he'll hit top bins

He's unfashionable, and obviously he's not at the standard of a Bruno or a Joelinton, but just like Krafth for the most part he does what he does well. Last night he added balance to the midfield, winning the ball well which helped us control the middle of the park which we haven't done well in ages, and was able to go properly box to box throughout. He's a body in the right place so often which we lack when it's Bruno and Tonali.

Obviously he's an easy target for our dimmer fans, not everyone is a superstar and he isn't perfect, but he's a perfectly decent player.

Midfield is much more balanced with Longstaff and Willock in.

Trying to shoehorn Bruno and Tonali into the same team reminds me of the Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes debacle. They both want to play the same role and do the same thing and neither can offer what Longstaff and Willock bring to the team. They're by far both better footballers than Longstaff and Willock but collectively as a midfield we're better off only playing one of them and the results back that up.

Also the link up of Joelinton LW and Willock left of the midfield 3 was a massive factor in finishing 4th the other year. They have a great understanding and chemistry together, they're able to interchange positions seamlessly causing defenders headaches and they're great at pressing together. It's worth pushing Gordon out to the right to have the Joelinton / Willock combination on the left. And it solves the problem at RW becuase Gordon is more than capable there.

If you were picking a front 6, these wouldn't be the best 6 individuals but as a collective team it's by far the most effective combination and hopefully one that we'll see a lot of.

Longstaff - Bruno (or Tonali) - Willock
Gordon - Isak - Joelinton
This. Well said. <applause>
