I can see why they did it, even if it's a load of **** PR from the club. Negativity town is absolutely pointless and will achieve nothing, other than harming the team. Anyone protesting in the stadium today can f*** off. We all know the issues, support the team 100%.

Dunno if this has been posted, but it's an intriguing read. Interesting that Benitez and Lascelles agreed to do that. I know you could argue that they were forced to, but I can't see either of them doing that. Especially not with the comments they've been making recently, Rafa in particular.
SpoilerShow
Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez, captain Jamaal Lascelles and chief Lee Charnley have defended their summer recruitment in a joint statement on the eve of their first game of the season.

Fabian Schar, Martin Dubravka, Salomon Rondon, Yoshinori Muto, Kenedy, Ki Sung-yueng and Federico Fernandez all joined prior to Thursday's deadline.

The statement asks for "unity" and to get behind the efforts on the pitch.

However, fans plan to protest before Saturday's opener against Tottenham.

"We have a better squad than the one that finished 10th last term," said the statement.

"Doing good business in a transfer window is about ending the window clearly stronger than when you started and we believe we have done this."

After winning promotion back to the Premier League in 2016-17, owner Mike Ashley said Benitez and Charnley could have "every last penny the club generates" to build for the season ahead.

In a turbulent pre-season, Benitez said fans "need to be concerned" and admitted he had "no idea" over potential new signings, while the club's players later refused to co-operate with the media in a dispute over bonuses.

The statement continued: "Given our finishing position last season, we already had a team of players who were more than capable of performing well in the Premier League.

"They have shown heart, guts and determination and the inference that they are 'Championship' players and not good enough is unfair and untrue. The players all believe in themselves and in the quality of the squad, and we all believe in the players."

I think if Yedlin's crossing got better he could be an excellent right winger - alas we need him to defend.

Clark will be our back up LB I'd guess.

He had a couple of run-outs in pre-season, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Aarons and Mitro linked up well last pre-season and neither really got a chance at the start of the season.
Well Aarons got injured ifirc

I thought Yedlin was a lot better in the second half of the season, and unfairly received none of the credit for the team's goals against improving.

House of Fraser gets a 5 - decent enough purchase.
I'm worried about it's future sell-on value. Really seems a player on the decline.

I think we'll see Sterry being given a go too this year.

Unless I missed something he hasn't left

I'm sure he will but it still won't stop Yedlin being the weak link in our defense. He's reasonable, but defensively suspect and doesn't add enough going forward to make up for that. Would've been one of my priority areas without question.

Otherwise I'm relatively happy, looking forward to how we start tomorrow.

Because Yedlin is pretty naff and Manquillo can cover both sides equally naffly. Our right hand side is way more exposed than our left.
Probably why Ritchie will end up playing most of the season.

I still think we needed a right back far more than a left back.
Why? We have Yedlin and Manquillo at RB. I know Manquillo isn't great but we only have Dummett at LB.

got two great players in with Dubravka and Kennedy, solid players in Ki and Schar, and then the rest are average. Nothing terrible, nothing shocking, nothing outstanding. Average season ahead.

Which players did we get rid of?
Off the top of my head (excluding released players):

Colback - loan
Saivet - loan
Toney - £500k
Armstrong - £1.75m
Mitrovic - £22m
Merino - £10m
Mbemba - £6m
Gayle - loan
Sels - £4m

So just over £44m made, spent about £25m plus loan fees, so probably closer to £30m. Still a nice little £14m summer bonus for Ashley.
<erm> well that puts a sour twist on things

Considering the constraints Rafa was under, I think he has done fantastically well. No, it's not what he wanted, and yes we should have at least bought/loaned a LB (Again, not Rafa's fault) but he's STILL managed to upgrade our squad. I doth my cap off to him. You just wonder what our team/squad would look like with even just a little bit of cash injection.
Yes, our likely starting XI this season will look stronger than last seasons so he's done well. Like you say, imagine what he could do if we had an owner that had even the slightest bit of ambition.
