Re: Holidays
Sat in Basel airport for almost 4 hours now. Plane arrived and was quickly deemed grounded due to fumes of unknown origin.
Basel airport section I'm in has one tiny, tiny bar only selling cans of Heineken and really dodgy sandwiches so I'm roughing it out on duty free chocolate and s*** beer.
Replacement flight due sometime about 9pm local time...

At airport on way back from Munich.
Had two days here and then got the train to Salzburg for a day trip (only 1h 45m from Munich), would highly recommend both.

Salzburg was lovely. We went down for the Xmas markets so was still nice, crisp cold and snowy.bodacious benny wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 5:16 pmAt airport on way back from Munich.

Re: Holidays
Booked my solo trip to France for middle of August. Off to Tours for a night, head to a mates house for a few days and then a few quick stops as I head up the Loire Valley to take in Ambois, Blois, Orleans and spend the last night in Paris.
Then off to see my Dad in West Palm Beach in mid-October as his health is slowly deteriorating.

I'm off to Perth next month to visit a mate - only there for 12 nights so not travelling to the East Coast but will explore plenty in and around Perth.

Re: Holidays
Wife and daughter went away for 5 days and it was bliss walking about in my boxers, scoffing pepperoni pizza, listening to music, watching lots of crap on TV.
They're back now and within 10 minutes was asked to turn down the music and explain all the pizza boxes in the recycling bin.
Fun while it lasted.

Re: Holidays
I'm currently having a weekend break near Wales, rented a nice little cottage for a couple of nights, turned up and the owners have baked a batch of fresh scones and provided clotted cream and 2 types of preserve along with some fresh apple and ginger juice from one of the local farms. Cost the same per night as the local premier inn. Absolutely buzzing with the place, only downside is it's 4 hours away from me, otherwise I'd be here every other weekend.

Re: Holidays
Been in Australia (Perth) for a couple of weeks visiting a mate. Bloody great place.
It’s chilled out, everything is spotlessly clean (no rubbish in the streets, no vandal etc), cost of living is decent (large coffee is about £2.50-£3.00, fuel is under a pound a litre, electric is free as every house has solar and enough sun to generate what they need), didn’t see city centres full of chavs or t*** kids in Jd sports clobber. Weather is sunshine most of the year - it’s their winter now and it was 20 degrees most days. Average salary is £40,000 a year. You can drive into town or public parks, tourist sites etc and not have to pay eye watering amounts to park.
If my personal circumstances were different I’d be bloody tempted to emigrate as the uk is going down the pan.

Just got back from Southport. So much better than Blackpool (not hard tbf) but the little towns close to it are so nice as well like Ainsdale and Formby.

Re: Holidays
MrsOT is a bit stressed out and gutted that her next time off work is going to be with her mother so trying to plan a weekend away somewhere in the UK.
Any ideas?
I reckon I have to book somewhere not in Kent, Sussex, Surrey or Hampshire as all "to" close to home but also don't want to pay a bloody fortune on train fares.

Re: Holidays
Should look at flights and accommodation in Europe too. Might work out around the same price or even cheaper.
I bet somewhere like Budapest, flights and accommodation would be really cheap. Plus it's cheap while you're there too.

Unfortunately wherever you go in the uk you will get absolutely rinsed on trains and accommodation. Wales is a shout but you’ll be relying on a horrifically bad Transport for Wales service for part of your journey.

Re: Holidays
Isle of Wight it is then.
Picturesque train journey to Portsmouth followed by a romantic cruise at dusk to Ryde where we shall than partake in fine dining on the Esplanade next to the hoverport.
Next morning we can hop onto a nostalgic tube train to the end of the line for a leisurely pub crawl and lunch before returning to Ryde and walking in the evening down the beach to a place for dinner on the harbour wall.
