It really isn't.

The iPhone 5 is 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6x70.6x8.6mm
The Sony Xperia Z is 139mm x 71mm x 7.9mm
The HTC One X+ is 134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm
The Google Nexus 4 is 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm

I don't what to carry the Rosetta Stone in my pocket, but idealy I do not really want an iPhone either. Third world problems .

I've got the Xperia T and it doesn't really seem ridiculous in size.

Because I do not want to lug it around with me. I would like a phone that could actually properly fit in my pocket .

Get a tailor to make all your pockets bigger.

Get jeans with pockets that can actually fit things in. Also looking back, you're comparing a phone with a 4" screen (iPhone 5) to phones with a 4.7" to 5.0" screen, of course the latter are going to be bigger. If you look at 4" screen phones, like the Galaxy S3 Mini, you get a similar size to the iPhone 5, or shorter in that case (121.55mm length).
