Referendums, I swear the population at large just does not think things though well enough to vote sensibly.
Guernsey general election coming up on 7th October. A referendum has changed the voting rules. We used to elect 38 politicians from a number of districts, but the referendum returned a change whereby everybody gets to vote for all candidates. So now we get to vote for 38 politicians from a selection of 119 candidates. Who the hell is going to read 119 manifesto's in order to make an informed decision?
Answer: nobody, it's going to be a s*** show of uninformed guesswork and name recognition.
119 candidates is surely everyone that lives on Guernsey!
Almost.
It's a well paid part-time job for most of them which is why it is a popular thing to stand. Earn enough to make a decent living but little enough work you can do it part time, which is what most of them do. 90 odd percent of them are completely unqualified for the job as well (which I guess is true of most politicians everywhere).
So ridiculous that every voter is allowed to vote for 38 of them. I'll be hard pushed to find 10 worth voting for.

On a different note but same place just read about Guernsey FC having to opt out of the league due to covid one good thing though the league letting them return for the 21/22 season.

Yeah, that is a bugger, but our travel restrictions are really strict so it is not feasible to have teams going each way each weekend. Anybody arriving in Guernsey from the UK has to self-quarantine for two weeks, with an up to £10,000 fine or imprisonment for breaching it. So non-starter basically.
And yeah good that the league is reasonable enough to let us back in next year.
Accept the invite and don't send a response like a normal person.
Or do what I do. Accept and then don't show up.
I'm terrible for that one too. I work pretty much exclusively in remote desktops but the Outlook and Teams notifications were pissing me off so I got rid of them. The consequence of that is I seem like an ignorant prick, but that is a bonus if it means people stop talking to me and inviting me to things.
