So if the tourists stop going, how long before the protests about mass unemployment?

Re: Holidays
It distorts the financial ecosystem, so tour operators, hotels, taxis etc see a huge increase in income, whereas the regular industries suffer. It's a major problem when Americans go to poor places and give the waiters big tips, far exceeding the standard pay.Bodacious Benny wrote:Saw something in the news yesterday about local people in certain cities / areas protesting about tourism. It can bring a lot of money to areas but also pushes up prices for locals who can often no longer afford to live in the places they grew up so are coming into direct conflict with tourism. Dubrovnik was one of the places mentioned.

Just back from 10 days in sa coma. Absolutely roasting the entire time I was there. Don't think it was less than 36c and a few days it was 39c.
Off to Albufeira on Saturday morning for 5 days too.

Yeah I went about a month ago. A brilliant place as long as you know what you're letting yourself in for. Summer is packed with tourists, prices are high but I wouldnt go as far to say they're London prices. And prepare yourself for a few steep walks now!UlversToon wrote:Stayed just outside Dubrovnik a couple of times most recently in June, lovely place!Mag_Laad wrote:Overseastoon its amazing there went back in January! Get a Roma pass card when you do, saves you a bit on travel and sightseeing etc like Vatican, St Stephens Basilica (tough climb to top of tower is awful but worth it for the view), Coliseum etc.
I live in London so flights are cheap for me wherever normally, looking at maybe booking Dubrovnik soon. Anybody been?

Depends where you go I suppose. There are some pubs and bars that do beers for £2ish.Southern fairy wrote:Yeah I went about a month ago. We stayed just outside Dubrovnik - about 20mins by boat - and the prices were quite reasonable although, like anywhere, there were some that were fairly expensive. Never seen Game of Thrones but understand this has added extra tourist numbers doing the tour!

My next plan for Croatia is island hopping. Only managed to see Brac when I was in Split but would love to see Hvar and Korcula too.

Re: Holidays
Anyone got any suggestions on decent places to go in November? Can't get a week off in the summer so taking a late holiday this year.
Not desperate for hot weather but it certainly helps.

Croatia: Split or Dubrovnik. I've also heard Pula is nice. Flights are relatively cheap, the weather will still be half decent and it's just generally an amazing place to be.Acid Hippo wrote:Anyone got any suggestions on decent places to go in November? Re: Holidays
Can't stand North Africa. Went to Tunisia a few years ago, great weather etc. and interesting place but the locals drove me mad. Whenever you leave the hotel it's like open season on you, people grab you and try to pull you into their shops. You've literally got to tell them to f*** off. Can't relax at all.Micky Quim wrote:EgyptAcid Hippo wrote:Anyone got any suggestions on decent places to go in November? Can't get a week off in the summer so taking a late holiday this year.
