New Amsterdam is a pretty cool part of the city.

Belem - there are some good museums (combat museum and marine museum were great) and monuments there.Ramone wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 11:58 amYeah, I was in Lisbon last year but it was quite a brief visit and have been wanting to go back ever since.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 11:47 am
Never been but heard that Porto and Lisbon are both very nice
Alfama - another great military museum and loads of little cafes and restaurants hidden among the winding streets.
Bairro Alto - loads of bars and restaurants, very lively at night.
Graca - Castle and a nice miradouro with amazing views across the city.
Rua da Prata - if you want to buy drugs.
Kindly deeds done for free!

Off to the States in September
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.

Well we are staying on The Wharf which by the looks of it means we could be sorted for food for the next 15 years 'Everything' interests me, it's sort of like London, I can just google all of the main sites, they are fairly obvious but I don't really know anything off the beaten or hidden gems track food or culture wise.PTAO? wrote: ↑Tue Jul 31, 2018 8:51 pm. If you've got a car then head out to the Shenandoah National Park. It's a few hours out of central DC but the Blue Ridge mountains are lovely.Blue & Maroon wrote: ↑Tue Jul 31, 2018 11:49 amIn Washington DC for 4-5 days in a couple of weeks if anyone has got any suggestions, apart from the obvious.
Six Flags America is a great theme park nearby as well.

Re: Holidays
In all seriousness, I've reached out to a food critic I met whilst there so she should be able to recommend things on the culinary side.
In terms of the obvious things, I actually found them to be a lot better than I expected, the monuments are awesome, worth seeing both day and night, and I had a lot of fun at a baseball game. If you choose to go, just get the cheapest tickets (around $15) and then hang out by the bar in full view of the pitch. Just be warned the beer is ~$10.
The White House is kinda boring, but worth seeing I guess. The Secret Service guys are actually really friendly and helpful, one even gave me a 10 minuted pointing tour and history of the nearby buildings.
Exploring Georgetown is good fun too, more chilled bars, shops and restaurants.

I'm heading for safari and the beach, will let you know how it goes. I'm actually going to be the first in my family (my father was born there) to go to the country in 51 years, since they all left...

My wife is like a magnet for biting insects and flying things, whenever we're away I don't get bit at all and she's covered
You can borrow her for a fee
