As for Europe, I've done it a couple of times - it's usually how I pick a place to live. The first time was only a few countrys but quite extensively; France, Germany and all of Benelux. The second time was France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic (where we stopped and got a flat).
I'd thoroughly recommend it though, especially around the alps which are breathtaking in every country they run through; from the Italian villages high up in the tree covered mountains to the twisting Swiss roads or Bavarian castles.
Africa is incredible. I went to South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland, Namibia, Zambia and sort of Zimbabwe. I did some volunteer work in both South Africa and Swaziland. I would love to go and do it again. Both different types of volunteer but both very satisfying and a great experience.

I would love to do that around Europe, I wouldn't like to do it by myself though, so need to rope someone into it. It sounds amazing.

P.s. I also went to the World Cup Final in South Africa - something to tell the Grand-kids one day!

Only done North Africa and f***ing hated it. Amazing landscapes, but the people just piss me off - no respect for your own personal space.

Where did you go? Care to say more about the respect...or lack of it?

Come to London.

A friend nearly caused a riot in Morocco and he'd only been in the country for less than an hour.

Trying to get out of the airport to the coach to head off to the resort was hell as there were hundreds of hawkers blockading them and forcing their wares into peoples faces. My friend has never been the most patient of people and after 5 minutes of being pushed around and shouted at he lost it. Grabbing the nearest copper plate from a hawker who wouldn't leave him alone, he smashed it it over the blokes head. There followed a brief silence that the tour guide used to shout out 'Get on the ****ing bus now!'. They raced towards the bus, the police appeared from nowhere and held the irate hawkers at bay while the tourist piled on the coach.

He was forced off the bus by the police because the crowd had surrounded it and refused to let it leave so that he could apologise and pay way over the odds for a now dented copper plate that hangs proudly on his dining room wall.

After I finish uni in the summer I am planning to get a job for a few months to save up to drive around America <diva>.

Done a rough google map of the places I want to visit.

How long will you be there for? To be honest I don't see much point in heading over the east if theres only 1 or 2 places you want to go to. No point driving for a day to see one thing to drive on if that makes sense. You might be better off getting a flight from the West, over to the East and renting again if needed?

However, it looks like it would be absolutely amazing...who are you going with <whistle>

Was planning on doing a sort of massive loop; starting in New York and then sort of going around clockwise. But nothing is fixed at the moment so could still end up doing something like you suggested. Hopefully I will be there for about 2-3 months; so much to do and I do not want to rush or have time to be a factor.

Not sure at the moment have considered going with friends but currently I am leaning towards going on my own because then you can do whatever you want when you want and you do not have to compromise for anyone. Plus you will meet people along the way anyway.

A lot of places on that map.

Look at gasbuddy.com to keep costs down as well with travel and that site that was mentioned about couch sharing

I agree with you saying about doing it on your own because of the compromising, however if you're always driving on your own and sleeping in the car you might not meet as many people as you think. You best bet is to stay in hostels and then see if anyone is going to the same place as you next. Then of course you can charge them for the petrol (as it will be cheaper for them than company travel) and it means you will save money yourself and have some company. Win win situation in my eyes....just don't pick up a murderer.

I dunno about everybody else but I enjoy travelling alone; having somebody to travel with to prevent loneliness or whatever isn't even remotely important to me.

I have only really travelled alone, and I love it, but there are pros and cons with both.

Edit: It can get a bit lonely at night if your driving or there is know-one staying at the same place as you.

Edit again: However if you go with another person, you might not meet many people as your always with someone anyways so you don't feel the need to meet someone (I hope that makes sense)

Japan. Fantastic holiday destination. Shame about the current exchange rate.
Bali, for obvious reasons, though it's over developed now.
India - probably not the best choice for a shorter holiday mind.
California - I'm biased as I have a home in Monterey. Drive from San Francisco to LA (or vice-versa). The coastal route of course - the scenery down Route 1 is pretty damn nice.

I used to head off for long weekends round Europe with a group of mates and it was great fun but I did my inter-railing for 3 months by myself and enjoyed it far more. Having the opportunity to just sit down at a cafe, read a book, relax and enjoy my surroundings has always been a crucial part of travelling for me.

100% this for me too. I love spending time alone and far from getting lonely, I get to appreciate every second of time to think, read and experience the surroundings properly. Added to that there's only a very small number of people I think I could stomach to be around for so long.

America's great. Just use your common sense safety wise. The people are much friendlier and the place 'feels' safer than the UK, but you better keep an eye on the neighbourhoods you wander into.

Cheers I will take a look at that <ok>.

Yeah I am planning to sleep in the car or camp whenever I can and just stay in a hostel/motel every now and again when I need to have a proper wash or something. I have also found a chain a truck stops that cars can use as well which have good facilities to sleep in your truck/car overnight and also includes showers and clothes washing facilities so they will be useful to use now and again also.
skalpel wrote:I dunno about everybody else but I enjoy travelling alone; having somebody to travel with to prevent loneliness or whatever isn't even remotely important to me.
I have only every been on holiday with either my family or just on my own. I like my own company and do not get lonely and prefer to be able to just go off and do whatever I feel like doing. Only reason I was thinking about doing it with a friend were money reason but I am not even sure if that would save a great deal and hopefully I can save up enough money that it is not a factor anyway.

The thing I am more apprehensive about is is wondering into a bear or something <laugh>.

Yeah I know but there is just so much to do/see in America and after uni just seems like the best time to try and see as much of it as I can.

Sounds good, although I would spend more than a couple of days in New York if I were you, fantastic city. <ok>
