Off work for almost two weeks and off to Budapest > Vienna > Bratislava for a holiday to celebrate my 40th.

Looking like it could be pretty decent weather too!

Sounds like a great trip and have a bloody wonderful 40th!

Been to Bratislava and it was great fun. Very small city so everything is nearby, people are lively and beer is good and cheap.

On the way up to the castle was a bar that served the cheapest pint. I think it was about 30p.

Cheers mate!

I've been to Budapest and Vienna before but never Bratislava. Weather not meant to be great while we're there so might just walk to the castle and plonk myself at that bar and keep on spending 30 pence!

More context. Less than £2 a pint and 65p a can. Hungarian wine not too bad either

If you're after a holiday spot that's a bit more chill than Malia or Magaluf, places like Santorini, Crete, or the Amalfi Coast offer stunning scenery and a more relaxed vibe. Croatia's coastline is another great option with its mix of historic towns and beautiful beaches.

Didn't make it up the castle in the end and didn't find a pint for 30p. But did find pints for £1.50 which I thought was pretty decent!

Still a great price.

To be honest, the castle wasn't brilliant to wander around as seems to have been mainly rebuilt so you've not really missed out on anything there.

Bratislava is a nice place for a beer or two and the old town is lovely for a walk about.

It's a lovely place. And it was a nice way to end the holiday after the hustle and bustle of Vienna.

Bizarrely the cheapest place we found was at Bratislava's main train station.

2 pints of Pilsner
2 Brandys (40 ml measure - love it)
Large lemonade
Slice of vanilla custard chocolate cake

€12.70!

Booze (especially beer) is cheaper than soft drinks in Slovakia!

Anyone been to Brussels lately? Looking to book a stag there around January. Some of the bars look wicked. Also cheap and quick to get to on the Eurostar.

Although a friend of mine recently stopped overnight there and said it was “like Calais jungle with a few squares”. I’m convinced he stayed near the station in the worst part of town…

In Dublin for a few days, been 4 times and always decent. Can’t recall seeing this many homeless people here before tho, or anywhere else I’ve ever been for that matter.

Several nice areas to drink in Brussels.

The Grand Place is a stunning place to have a drink but it's touristy so prices are a bit higher.

Around the Grand Place as a few back streets full of bars and restaurants. Still a tad higher pricing than usual.

Sablon is another square about 10 minutes walk from the Grand Place and worth a beer or two.

Ixelles is a commune in Brussels and has several bars in the area around Place Flagey.

Avenue Louise is expensive but at the far end of it towards the park has plenty of bars and late night venues.

Stay away from bars around Gare Sud/Zuid (Eurostar station) and Gare Nord. Just not worth the hassle.

Gare Nord though does have the red light district and the road is affectionate know as "Platform 19"

Day 10 in Japan and soon flying back to Blighty via Singapore for 6 days.

Japan is amazing. I can manage most languages and get away with it but trying to half arse Japanese just causes confusion so far better to be polite, try the basics and then flounder in pigeon English.

Food has been exceptional. From a Michelin restaurant in Kyoto to a back alleyway grill shack/bar in Tokyo. Just mind blowing tasty.

Been through Tokyo, Fuji and the FujiQ theme park, Mishima, Kyoto, Osaka, Himeji and back in Tokyo for the last few days.

A few days before the flight the chest pains came back again, quite brutal. Gave up smoking so had tons of dental work done before as gums were just bleeding 24/7.

Nearly didn't make it out as wasn't sure if be able to cope with the 22 hour flight and then the city travel but so glad I just thought f*** it and made it out here.
