Match day - NUFC v Swansea

Postby Toondes » Fri Jan 12, 2018 8:54 pm

Swansea City (h)

Newcastle attempt to extend their 100% record in 2018 to three games when they host basement side Swansea City on Saturday.

It's an old-fashioned 3pm kick-off at SJP and tickets are on public sale now, with additional availability in Level 7 due to the visitors only taking 1,000 places.

Travel 1: There's no metro service between South Gosforth and Four Lane Ends in either direction on Saturday and Sunday. Replacement bus service number 900 serves affected stations.

Travel 2: Engineering works at Newcastle Central station will result in significant alterations to rail services, with additional changes on Saturday.

NUFC: Jamaal Lascelles and Rob Elliot are available, but Aleksandar Mitrovic, Jesus Gamez and Florian Lejeune remain sidelined.

SCFC: Leroy Fer will be available to play following a successful appeal against his dismissal in Saturday's FA Cup tie at Wolves but Kyle Naughton is absent as he completes a three match ban for violent conduct.

There are doubts over Angel Rangel, Leon Britton, Ki Sung-yueng and Tammy Abraham (hip).

The Swans have lost seven times on their travels so far this season in the Premier League, taking points from trips to Southampton and Spurs (both 0-0) and winning at Palace (2-0) and Watford (2-1).

This will be the fourth game that manager Carlos Carvalhal takes charge of, following that win at Watford, a 0-2 home loss to Spurs and a scoreless draw at Wolves in the FA Cup.

The Portuguese-born boss has a 100% record against us from his time in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, twice winning 1-0 at Gallowgate (once in the League Cup and once in the Championship) and recording a 2-1 league success at Hillsborough back in April.

Referee: Graham Scott - first Toon appointment of the season for the Oxfordshire-based official, who took charge of our 2-0 away victories at Leeds and Cardiff in the Chamopionship last season.

Parking: Northumbria University offer weekend car parking to the public for £4 all day (or £1 per hour). 500 spaces are available at Lipman and City Campus East: book online here or turn up to pay & display.

The usual Newcastle United Food Bank collection stall will be manned pre-match on Strawberry Place.

Roads around SJP will be traffic free for 20 minutes either side of the final whistle, with barriers closed at these junctions:

Strawberry Place/Leazes Park Road
Strawberry Place/Barrack Road
Strawberry Place/St James Street
Strawberry Lane

Leazes Terrace will also be traffic-free for the same period, additionally closing from 2pm.

UK TV: None

Overseas TV: To follow

UK Radio: Live on talkSPORT 2

Local Radio: Live on BBC Radio Newcastle

Stats:

Swans @ SJP - PL era:
2015/16 won 3-0 Lascelles, Sissoko, Townsend
2014/15 lost 2-3 Perez, de Jong
2013/14 lost 1-2 Sh.Ameobi
2012/13 lost 1-2 Ba
2011/12 drew 0-0
2009/10 won 3-0 Harewood 2, Lovenkrands
1994/95 won 3-0 Kitson 3 (FAC)

Full record v Swansea:

Having beaten West Ham and Stoke City both home and away, victory over the Swans at SJP would see United record a third PL double of the season, following their 1-0 success at the Liberty Stadium.

Really need a win to follow up an excellent result at Stoke, meaning we'll probably draw <laugh>

A win here might provide some daylight between us and the bottom 3 - and keep.us in touch with a few above.

If it's a draw that isnt fatal - however will be very disappointing.

A good attacking line up needed. I'd like to see Shelvey start with Merino and Atsu + Ritchie - and Gayle - Perez up top.

Maybe Aarrons, Saivet and Diame on the bench if we need some added firepower in 2nd half.

Have a feeling Benitez will be more cautious though.

Serious issue if he does take it cautiously considering Swansea is the worst attacking team in the league and makes us look prolific by comparison.

Got to be a 2-0+ score line for this. They are absolute garbage currently and this is the ideal time to get points on the board and potentially secure safety

Big win. Very big win. Both in terms of importance and scoreline. Extremely big win.

The new Swansea gaffer seems to have reinvigorated them - so we will need to take it seriously.
Id say they dont offer much threat so best to get after them from the off.

You might want to put a little emphasis on just how big a win this could be, there.

If I was to sum it up in one word, I think I'd go for 'big'.

If he goes defensive at home to Swansea after that horrible Brighton game he's going to lose even more of the crowd. It's really not helping our home record.

Merino not starting is disappointing.

Would've liked to see Merino starting, but otherwise happy with that.

Other than Merino, it's pretty much the side everyone would have wanted. Diame has done well recently as much as it pains me to admit it so it's not the end of the world.

Pretty happy with the line up. Would love to see us go straight at them - they are toilet.

That Swansea team looks absolute ****, if we don't beat them at home we deserve whatever we get this season!

Just listening to the SSN preamble. Question: has Phil Thompson ever completed a full sentence?
