Not to defend the club, but I always expect the newly promoted clubs to outspend the established clubs. End of the day they are doing everything they can to cement a place in the PL and will pour all the PL money into transfers, I think it became clear not many were interested in paying the fee Celtic wanted, we have that luxury really, teams coming up don't have the luxury of being tight arses.

I'm not sure I agree entirely that promoted teams splash the cash like that. Certainly there are some that do, but lots spend a reasonable but not extravagant amount, and others don't spend much at all. It's definitely a mixed bag.

Norwich don't spend much (ever), Sheffield Utd didn't in their first season, I don't recall Leeds going overboard last summer etc. Some definitely do but not always the case.

Oh definitely, I'm not saying they all do it, it just doesn't surprise me when they do. Established teams have the PL teams/wages/quality already in place so they can be more picky and play hard ball. Teams coming up have to catch up most of the time so I can fully understand why these transfers happen.

Seeing very loose reports saying that we "expect" to sign Lemina as early as this week. Four million. Not a terrible spot of business if true. Improves our quality in depth. Mongstaff desperately needs a loan for his development, though.

Yeah I don't mind if that's the case and as you say, Mongstaff 100% needs a season long loan somewhere to play regularly.

Sheffield spent 20M on McBurnie, 22M on Berge, 10 on Mousset , they also paid around 4m on Henderson's loan fee so that is a fair bit

Leeds spend around 80M to bring in Rodrigo, Raphinha, Koch and Llorente so they did spend also.

That’s a more useful search than just looking for the top 30 left-backs aged under 30 in France. We want to know who the top five are who can do this, this and this.

“And then, at the end of the process, when you have done the old-fashioned scouting, you look to see what impact they’ll have — it’s almost like doing a virtual transfer, where you can see if the player will actually improve the team or not and by how much. It’s due diligence.”

ASM is judged to be worth about 6 points to Newcastle over a season, and even with those Real Analytics' 1m+ simulations have us being relegated.

Best of luck to him, I agree on his day he was one of our best defenders, but due to injuries he could never stake his place. Last year of his contract at 30 years old best to get some money for him. As said I think we're OK at CB injuries permitting outside of Lascelles, Fede, Clark and Schar both Dummett, Krafth and Hayden can fill in if needs be.

Can see why he was sold but when we play 3 at the back he should certainly be in our first XI, no question. Proved his fitness at Alaves last season and played a lot of games. I’d be interested to know how much we got for him, if it was only a few million (likely) then I’d rather have kept him but obvs club are looking at the balance sheet. Good luck to him, he’s too good with the ball to get picked by Bruce anyway.

Not sure, but sounds like we were definitely haggling over a tiny fee.

I think it was a bit of both really, looks like Nice have paid the full 8M that Southampton were looking for (We were set to pay that too just not all in one go, which is normal for most clubs not just ourselves).
