Matty Longstaff looks set to sign a new contract at Newcastle United having been persuaded to commit his future to the club.
The 20-year-old had been expected to leave after his contract at St James’ Park ended last month. A number of clubs were chasing the midfielder’s signature and the Italian side Udinese led the way with a move that would have brought Newcastle £400,000 in compensation. Leeds United were also interested.
However, the Newcastle manager Steve Bruce, who gave Longstaff his debut in October last year, insisted that he was keen for the player to stay. Talks over a new contract, which represents a significant improvement on his previous £800-a-week deal, opened last week.

Good news though if he signs it. Shelvey, Hayden, M Longtaff, S Longstaff, Hendrick gives us decent CM cover.

Hendrick can play out wide and attacking mid/no.10/SS.. and didn't even Dyche even play him at full-back one time? So his versatility will come in handy for squad depth.. the new Irish PerchinoBodacious Benny wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 8:31 amColback's Orange Tufts wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 8:14 amNow all thats left is for Hendricks to be picked ahead of him most of the time

I still see Longstaff as more attacking, if we play an attacking formation I'd see him at the top of a midfield 3/behind the striker. Him in the middle with ASM and Almiron either side could be tasty.

Kid still has plenty to prove imo but he doesn't count as a squad member due to age which is good news

If true I'd boot him out on loan for half a season, think there would be plenty of takers in the championship.

While I agree he could do with the development, we'd leave ourselves a little light in midfield. Just Hayden, Shelvey and SLongstaff. Possibly Hendrick if and when that's confirmed.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 11:26 amIf true I'd boot him out on loan for half a season, think there would be plenty of takers in the championship.

If we are playing just the 2 CM then I'd say that's enough, could always put a recall clause incase of injuries.CIH wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 11:44 amWhile I agree he could do with the development, we'd leave ourselves a little light in midfield. I think the recall clauses can only be used during transfer windows. And we will be down to barebones pretty quickly, especially considering our history with injuries.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 11:46 amIf we are playing just the 2 CM then I'd say that's enough, could always put a recall clause incase of injuries.

Depends on the agreement between the clubs, but outside of transfer window if there is no agreement then it can only be done in transfer window yes.CIH wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 11:47 amI think the recall clauses can only be used during transfer windows. It's almost like people ranting about the club for months on this subject, or similarly calling him a money hungry, ungrateful kid were getting ahead of themselves...
Glad he's staying though. Still think we're all depth in the position without having anyone good enough to be starting (if aspiring to more than a bottom third finish).

Only 2 years - the same as Sean’s deal. I’m guessing he negotiated for that, to make sure he gets games...

Agree with this. It's great seeing the young lads breaking through, especially in an era where people throw stupid money around to sign average players.
