Newport County v Newcastle - League Cup 4th Round

Post by bodacious benny » Wed Sep 30, 2020 7:56 am

Team: Martin Dubravka, Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett and Matty Longstaff all miss out, but Ryan Fraser is expected to be included.

It appears that neither Allan Saint-Maximin or Fabian Schar will feature, while Christian Atsu was again nowhere to be seen on training ground photos.

Ahead of the deadline for naming the 25 man PL squad, Jacob Murphy and Dan Barlaser remain available for selection, along with DeAndre Yedlin.

(from nufc.com)

Presumably it won't be a dissimilar team to that of the last round with the likes of Gillespie, Krafth, Yedlin, Murphy, S Longstaff, Joelinton and maybe Fraser starting.

Ideally wouldn't want to risk both Lascelles and Fernandez, but with Clark injured may not have a choice especially with Krafth potentially at RB.

Has Twitter exploded again over Steve Bruce being respectful to the opposition?

Expect Barlaser to be involved tonight before completing a move elsewhere later in the week. Much like Ross Barkley last night on the bench and today signing for Villa

Yep. They're the ones that get smashed on the way to matches on 4 cans of Carling, get into the stands and act hard trying to pick fights with opposition fans safe in the knowledge that they can't get over to them (and if they did meet outside for a fight they'd either run off crying or get their arse kicked).

I don't think it will be as easy as Morecambe, but I'm still expecting a win. I don't think it's disrespectful to suggest we should beat Newport, but they're a decent side and they won't make it easy for us.

That's the minority in fairness. The rest do all of that online and don't go to matches.

I agree, it's not disrespectful saying that we should win. Get off to a good start and we'll be okay, we'll field enough decent players to get the job done.

What the f*** do they expect him to say?! "We're miles ahead of Newport and we should beat them comfortably tonight. They're absolutely s****."

He has to be respectful and there's no shame in him being a bit cautious. Newport have previous for knocking bigger teams out. They've already knocked out Swansea and Watford this season. A few seasons back they knocked out Leicester and Boro before getting to the 5th Round of the FA Cup when City knocked them out (they still scored). In the season before that they knocked Leeds out of the FA Cup and took Spurs to a replay. They shouldn't underestimated at all!

A few of them think exactly that. It was bad enough last week, but to be so thick to do it the week after you've put 7 past the last team he was respectful to is beyond thick. It's as if none of them have watched a football press conference before, if you can criticise Bruce for anything there it's being a bit dull and cliche ridden, but when you've done decades of them what more can you say?

Even managers who aren't afraid of saying something controversial aren't going to walk out and say "this is just a formality" or something like that.

I'm sort of hoping him playing here means Hayden and Hendrick at the weekend.

Schar back on the bench, good news (for cover at least, he was truly horrendous after lockdown so hope he’s sorted himself out).
