Match Thread: Southampton v Newcastle

Post by Bodacious Benny » Fri Nov 06, 2020 9:13 am

From nufc.com:

The Magpies return to St. Mary's Stadium on Friday night for an 8pm start, live on Sky (not PPV).

NUFC: Martin Dubravka, Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey remain unavailable due to injury, while Dwight Gayle is back in training but estimated to be 2-3 weeks away from match fitness.

SFC: Danny Ings will definitely miss out after damaging his knee in Saturday's victory at Aston Villa.

Mohammed Salisu, Will Smallbone and Moussa Djenepo are all currently on the injured list.

The Saints have recovered from losing their opening two PL outings to put together a five match unbeaten run.

On home territory this season they've lost 2-5 to Spurs and recorded 2-0 victories over both West Bromwich Albion and Everton.

Referee: Peter Bankes - a second sighting this season, following his handling of the 1-1 draw at Spurs back in September.

VAR: Chris Kavanagh

It's going to be a tough game, think we'll probably go with an unchanged side.

Yep can’t see many reasons to change it for this one. Will be interesting to see how ASM does, the recent formation works for everyone else other than him.

Probably, like most people on here I would quite happily settle for a draw tonight but, for some unknown reason, I can see us sneaking a 1-0 or 2-1 victory - fingers crossed!

U23's playing Leeds, live here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqscCC7avrA
Paul Dummett features in the side as he steps up his comeback from injury, with him not playing for our first-team since January.

There’s also a surprise start for forgotten man Henri Saivet, while a trio of summer signings are all named in Chris Hogg’s starting XI.

Those three are Peruvian talent Rodrigo Vilca, former Schalke youngster Bradley Cross (who captains the side) and Niall Brookwell – the 18-year-old midfielder who arrived from Liverpool a few months ago.

See the starting 11 in full below, which also sees a ‘Trialist‘ (believed to be Hebburn star Cedwyn Scott) and Elliot Anderson start – with the latter playing just a few hours after landing a new ‘long-term’ contract at the club:

Err 3-0 down after 30 mins so don't bother <erk> <laugh>

3-1 looked a lot better since our goal Toure, Anderson and Vilca have looked good.

I heard the Leeds bench were demanding the ref stopped counting goals when it was at 3-2

Southampton look like one of the more solid small teams that are sticking with 4 at the back.

Always think they are risky throwing Betrand and KWP forward but good discipline from Romeo, Armstrong and WP.

Think they are happy to stay back cos Ings has been playing like Kane recently. Without him they are going to struggle making anything happen once the ball crosses the halfway line!

Not surprisingly tbf. Longstaff played well against Everton on his first full game back, hope he continues that form tonight.

I just want it tweaking so that Almiron is at the head of the midfield triangle rather than Hendrick being the tail of the triangle. If that remotely makes any sense. Bit more shape for Hendrick and Longstaff and allows ASM a bit more flexibility. Maybe.
