I'm sure he's fine, but there's any number of other central midfielders that should be available that would have played more the past couple seasons, and have more upside. That we have the familiarity of him having a mediocre loan spell with us shouldn't make him a preferred signing.

Going to say this for the umpteenth transfer window in a row, but central midfield is where we need to make the big signing IMO, our midfield is pedestrian at best and has been for ages, we need another Cabaye basically. also for the umpteenth transfer window in a row, we need a left back (though i'd be happy with Willems).

basically; Willock, Armstrong, Willems and a top midfielder is my transfer window hitlist

Transfer Market

Good little tool for stuff like this. Midfield players whose contracts expire this summer. Some interesting names on there <benny>

John Lundstrum might be a good example of a player we could attract and could be a different (read: better?) option to someone like Bentaleb. Anyone remember Clement Grenier? Younger than I thought at just 30, seems a lifetime ago we were linked to him. Seemed the obvious Cabaye replacement.

Hah, missed that comment as I was doing mine. I also completely agree. Willock, Armstrong and Willems with no key players leaving (Here's looking at you, Maxi) and that would be a decent window. A proper Cabaye midfielder to complement Hayden would be brilliant.

Sums my thoughts up perfectly. <applause>

Another Cabaye would be exactly what we need. Someone who not only attack but defend, comfortable on the ball, can take us further up the pitch, energetic, mobile & technically gifted. Add to that someone who's physically strong, athletic & powerful would be the icing on the cake.. like a mix between a Cabaye, Yaya Toure, Moussa Dembele (ex-Tottenham midfield player) & Patrick Viera would be perfect. <awe>

I wouldn't mind someone like Armstrong or even Joshua King (if he doesn't extend his contract with Everton).. someone decent enough to deputize/partner/compete with Wilson & can chip in with a few goals to take off all the goalscoring burden on Wilson, as I don't see Joelinton or Gayle hitting double figures anytime soon.

Willock is essential.. need to sign him! For obvious reasons (goals, energy, off the ball movement, work rate) but the potential this kid has is immense, could develop into a beast of a box-to-box as time goes on & he improves other parts of his game (vision, passing, defending, tackling, etc).. could be a future England international & I hope it's with us. <diva>

Good shouts.. John Lundstrum was one of Shefield's better players last season when they ended 9th. This season hasn't been that great but there's definitely a player in there.. solid & a hard-working box-to-box midfielder with creativity. Better than Hendrick for sure. Clement Grenier would be a interesting one.. we've been linked to him before & he's a classy operator but would he be able to adapt to the Prem's pace & physicality? Worth a punt for sure.. can play CM & AM... is a free-kick specialist & technically very gifted (dribbling, close control, passing, vision, footballing IQ) but his injuries/fitness record is a worry & he's in his 30s now so I don't know if we'll be in for him knowing he won't really have a resale value.

Just seen on that list that Diame (33 now) is on that list too.. back-up to Hayden anyone? :bandit: <run>

The list for expiring contracts next season (2022) looks better.. a lot of quality names that are entering there last years of there contract
most notable & realistic options (for CM) we should bid for..

Dennis Geiger
Matias Vecino
Suat Serder
Toma Basic
Unai Lopez
Xeka
Matt Grimes
Will Hughes
Lewis Cook
John Swift
Andy Rinomhota

Like your thinking! Though I'd much prefer Hayden be backing up our central midfielders than the other way around - recognizing you were kidding about Diame.
