Match day thread - NUFC v a**hole villa

Post by Toondes » Sat Jan 23, 2021 10:34 am

Aston Villa (a)

This evening sees Steve Bruce return to yet another one of his former clubs, when Newcastle face Aston Villa in a rearranged Premier League fixture at Villa Park.

It's an 8pm KO and live coverage is provided by Sky Sports.

Both sides come into this game on winless runs; Villa losing three and drawing one of their last four outings in all competitions while Newcastle's barren run is nine league and cup games (seven defeats and two draws).

A 0-2 loss last season was our first defeat at Villa Park in seven visits, but United haven't won any of their four games there since a 2-1 PL triumph in 2013/14.

The fixture was due to be played on Friday December 4th, but postponed following positive COVID tests in the Magpies squad. Villa then encountered similar issues, the closure of their training ground seeing an U23 side represent the club in the FA Cup.

With PL games against Spurs and Everton called off, Dean Smith's side returned to action at Manchester City on Wednesday - 19 days after their previous league game. City won that 2-0.

NUFC: Speaking on Friday, Bruce confirmed that Allan Saint-Maximin would play some part in Saturday's game.

The Frenchman hasn't kicked a ball in anger since the 0-2 home loss to Chelsea in late November - an 11 game absence.

Federico Fernandez remains out, while Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark and Dwight Gayle are all doubtful.

A recall to the side for Isaac Hayden beckons - possibly in central defence if neither Clark nor Schar make it.

AVFC: John McGinn is suspended and Kortney Hause injured. Trezeguet is a doubtful starter.

Villa boss Dean Smith was red-carded during Wednesday's 0-2 defeat at Manchester City.

On home territory this season, Villa have won three times (Sheffield United, Liverpool, Palace), drawn once (Burnley) and lost on three occasions (Leeds, Southampton, Brighton).

Referee: Simon Hooper - a swift return for the Wiltshire whistler, who took charge of Newcastle's 2-5 loss at Leeds last month.

VAR: Paul Tierney

Coral rate a Newcastle success on Saturday at 11/2, with the draw priced at 17/5 and a Villans victory 1/2.

Our usual scoreless at half time, losing at full time bet is 19/4 for this game, with the added misery of losing to nil upsizing that to 13/2.

Simple 2-0 loss.

I always felt sorry for Bruce with the cabbage thing. He's a poor manager but is trying, didn't deserve that treatment

If I was paid millions of pounds to be useless at my job I'd happily accept the odd cabbage hurdled in my direction

I found this to be particularly damning. Wasn't aware of it, but hardly surprising. Yet he's blowing his horn about being comparable to the 'mighty Rafa'.

I'll tune in until we have our first attempt on target and then I'll do something more productive.

This. Murphy / Ritchie over Hendrick any day of the week, especially with a aerial threat like Carroll. But Mr. Cabbage Kebab man knows what's best. <erk> <urgh>

Why on earth persist with a midfielder who's not a winger when you have two natural wide-man on the bench??? One with pace, crossing & directness (Murphy) & a grafter who's out of form but can still ping a ball in (Ritchie)... but no he shoehorns a natural CM into RM..??

3-1 Villa win. Grealish with an assist and goal. Watkins with a brace. Wilson consolation.

They just guess. Sky had it as 3-5-2 with Hayden in the back three.

I've seen 4-2-3-1 somewhere.

So it's not just us who are baffled by his line-ups!

Whereas in reality it’ll be 7-2-1
