Match day thread - Newcastle Utd v Leeds Utd
Leeds United (h)
Following a run of four successive away games in league and cup, Newcastle return home this evening as Marcelo Bielsa makes his first visit to St. James' Park.
It's a 6pm start, live on BT Sport as the Magpies bid to end a ten game winless run in all competitions (two draws and eight defeats).
NUFC: Federico Fernandez, Paul Dummett and Ciaran miss out due to injury, while DeAndre Yedlin is reportedly unavailable due to paperwork issues and Javier Manquillo rated "50/50".
Saturday saw Allan Saint-Maximin, Ryan Fraser, Dwight Gayle and Manquillo all return to action.
LUFC: Goalkeper Illan Meslier has returned to training after missing the last two games but Robin Koch, Gaetano Berardi and Diego Llorente won't feature.
This will be a first game for Leeds since their 0-1 home defeat by Brighton on Saturday January 16th - a third successive loss without scoring in all competitions.
Referee: Anthony Taylor - first Toon posting of the season for the official from very near Manchester.
Taylor's most recent Newcastle game was the 1-3 home loss to Liverpool that concluded last season in July.

I'm going to be optimistic and go for 0-0.
28%-72% possession.

I'm encouraged because Bruce was encouraged and if the players can be encouraged then this could be the match that encourages the club as a whole to kick on and win every match.

Back at SJP is the only thing I can cling to. Leicester look a good side and our 3 previous games at SJP yielded draws with Liverpool and Fulham, and a late win v West Brom. It's a must not lose game for sure.

Re: Match day thread - Newcastle Utd v Leeds Utd
Leeds, Palace and Southampton are our next three home games.
IF we get something out of Leeds I think it'll set us up nicely for Palace. Lose tonight and I think players will be so downbeat that we'll draw at best v Palace.

Re: Match day thread - Newcastle Utd v Leeds Utd
Anyone surprised? Nope.
Matty Longstaff injected a bit of energy into midfield in the difficult games he started and dumped in favour of the chuckle brothers in midfield.
Presumably it's a back 5 again with Hayden in at CB. At least we have Murphy who can cross the ball now that we've benched the player best suited to heading the ball...

Re: Match day thread - Newcastle Utd v Leeds Utd
I'm guessing it's a 5-4-1? Murphy and Lewis as WB's, Hayden dropping to CB. Shelvey and Hendrick - potentially the worst midfield pairing in the league? With Miggy and Fraser either side, and Wilson up fron. Hopefully creating a chance from nothing? Hayden needs to be starting in midfield, I'm fed up of this square peg round hole tactics. More so when it's proven that Bruce's defend till you die tactics simply don't work.

The gloves are off and he's doing it his way, not that 5 at the back that was all the players fault, no. He's starting today with, er, 5 at the back. The same s**** formation that we've seen a dozen times this season, that doesn't work.
Re: Match day thread - Newcastle Utd v Leeds Utd
In some ways it's liberating making peace with the L before kick-off. I have zero faith in this manager or this team selection.

f***ing hell, Rio. Apparently the issue is that we're not entertaining, not the fact we haven't won in two months.

In spite of everything, I'd still like to watch it. BT games are always a nightmare to find streams for. Anyone got any tips? (please don't say 'get BT' you funny ****...)

We are going to get absolutely steamrolled in the centre of midfield. Unless this is THE game in 15 that Shelvey has a blinder.
