Match thread - Saints Vs NUFC

Post by Toondes » Sat Feb 06, 2021 10:13 am

Southampton (h)

Newcastle play only their second Saturday 3pm home game of the season, when The Saints visit SJP. Once again, it's live on BT Sport.

NUFC: Newcastle are short-handed at the back, with Federico Fernandez, Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett all injured. Jamal Lewis is also doubtful, while Ciaran Clark is about to become a dad and may drop out of the squad accordingly.

Premier League clubs must submit their revised 25 man squad before this game, with Bruce confirming Christian Atsu will fill the spot vacated by DeAndre Yedlin.

The Ghanaian international last kicked a ball for United in the 1-0 home League Cup win over Blackburn Rovers in September but failed to make the 25 man selection for the first part of the current Premier League season.

29 year-old Atsu hasn't started a club game since the 2-2 Premier League draw at Everton in January 2020. He's out of contract at the end of this season and it remains to be seen whether he'll add to his tally of 97 appearances.

SFC: Ralph Hasenhuttl's side lost 0-9 at Manchester United on Tuesday, going down to ten men in only the second minute when Alexandre Jankewitz was dismissed in what was his first senior start.

He'll be suspended at SJP, but fellow red card victim Jan Bednarek mounted a successful appeal and will be available.

Oriel Romeu, Jannik Westergaard and Kyle Walker-Peters were all missing at Old Trafford but are back training.

Theo Walcott, Ibrahima Daillo, Michael Obafemi, William Smallbone, Nathan Tella, Mohamed Salisu and Stuart Armstrong are expected to be unavailable at SJP.

The Saints did cobble together nine players for their bench, but alongside former Magpie Fraser Forster were a sizeable chunk of the club's U23 side, including another goalkeeper.

That Old Trafford reverse follows back to back home defeats by Arsenal and Aston Villa and a defeat at Leicester City.

Transfer deadline day saw Shane Long join Bournemouth, while Takumi Minamino arrived from Liverpool on loan.

Referee: Craig Pawson - a third appointment of the season for the South Yorkshire whistler, following his handling of the 1-4 home defeat by Manchester United and 0-2 loss to Chelsea at SJP.

Any update on Ciaran Clark. Really hope he is able to play. Lewis out so two options - either Manquillo to LB and Krath in at RB, or Ritchie in at LB (or God forbid Hayden to RB ffs). Hopefully Willock in for Hendrick. Whether he brings ASM in for Shelvey as well I don't know, might be time tbh. We need to get at them and f*** me we need to win this game of football.

This or Kraft RB.. Manquillo LB. Either way we have to set up a team that's positive & going for the win. <ok>

Must-win is a understatement.

Honestly with the defensive woes I'd be tempted to go 3 (Schar/Hayden/Krafth) at the back just so Ritchie isn't playing fullback. Do that with a front three of Wilson/Almiron/ASM, plus Willock and some s**** in CM. It's not great but I'm wary of Hayden and Ritchie in a back four.

Hopefully Clark can play. Believe his missus went into labour yesterday but if baby was born before the middle of the night and no complications then no reason why he couldn't have had a decent night's sleep (does this even matter with all the adrenaline anyway!?)

Hayden not at DM a huge concern for me. Shame. Exciting to see Willock though, let's see what he's got.

That defense terrifies me. Need a decent midfield performance from Willock and Jeff, and we need to be on the front foot to make them defend.

This. Southampton's may have players out but they still look like a decent outfit.. there midfield with Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Romeu & Minimamo will be dangerous & competitive.. & with Ings up top they will always carry a goal threat & clinical finisher. Sort of worried now.. I'm happy Willock is starting but will miss Hayden's presence in DM... great to see ASM starting again. <awe>

Hampton' to win 1-2.. Bruce to go. Happy Days. <diva> <urgh>

Decent Southampton team unfortunately - we’ll lose.

I'm sure we always lose when Shelvey's captain. Defo going to miss Hayden in DM. Need Hendrick to really step up today.
