Match day thread - Man Utd v Newcastle UNITED

Post by Toondes » Sun Feb 21, 2021 2:12 pm

Steve Bruce returns to his former favourites this evening, when Newcastle visit Old Trafford in the Premier League.

It's a 7pm kick-off live on BT Sport.

The Magpies have actually scored first in six of their last seven games against the Red Devils (including their most recent three away trips).

It's time for another airing of the yellow change strip - the first time that we'll be clad in that colour here since our 1-0 success in December 2013.

Saturday saw Fulham beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Craven Cottage to move within three points of Newcastle.

Before Sunday, the Cottagers have taken 10 points from the last 21 and lost just once; we've managed six points in the same period and lost five.....

Current PL table - bottom six:

Pos Team Pld GD Pts
15 Burnley 25 -12 28
16 Brighton 24 -5 26
17 Newcastle 24 -15 25
18 Fulham 25 -11 22
19 West Brom 25 -36 14
20 Sheffield U 25 -25 11
Latest PL results/fixtures:

Fri 19.02.2021:
Wolves 1-0 Leeds United

Sat 20.02.2021:
Southampton 1-1 Chelsea
Burnley 0-0 West Bromwich Albion
Liverpool 0-2 Everton
Fulham 1-0 Sheffield United

Sun 21.02.2021:
West Ham 2-1 Spurs
Aston Villa v Leicester City (2pm) Sky
Arsenal v Manchester City (4.30pm) Sky
Manchester United v Newcastle (7pm) BT

Mon 22.02.2021:
Brighton & Hove Albion v Crystal Palace (8pm) Sky

Tue 23.02.2021:
Leeds United v Southampton (6pm) Sky

NUFC: Jeff Hendrick returns to the squad following his one match ban but Fabian Schar, Javier Manquillo and Callum Wilson remain sidelined.

Federico Fernandez remains unavailable but could be fit enough for consideration when Wolves visit SJP on Saturday.

Paul Dummett's ongoing hamstring problem may allow him to play some part on Sunday.

MUFC: Ahead of this game, the Red Devils were in Europa League action on Thursday night, beating Real Sociedad 4-0 in the Italian city of Turin.

Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani and Scott McTominay are all doubts, while Phil Jones and Paul Pogba miss out.

Former Newcastle youth academy player Shola Shoretire has been added to the senior squad just days after his 17th birthday. Fellow youngster Amad is also named, the 18 year-old having made a senior debut against Sociedad.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be missing several members of his usual backroom staff after they were advised to self-isolate.

Their places will be taken by youth coaching duo Mark Dempsey and former Magpie midfielder Nicky Butt.

Coral offer 10/1 on an away win, 9/2 the draw and 2/7 on a home success.

A 0-0 draw is priced at 16/1 while 11/1 gets you Newcastle to score first but be losing at both HT and FT.

Hayden, Shelvey and Lascelles all to be booked comes in at 33/1 while Willock to have one or more shots on target is rated at 7/4 (combining that with NUFC not to score and MUFC to win makes it 6/1).

Referee: Paul Tierney - second game of the season involving us for the Wigan whistler (who is a Latics fan) following the 0-0 home draw with Liverpool on Boxing Day.

I hope bruce plays

Dubravka

kraft lascelles clark lewis

hayden wilock

fraser almiron ASM

Carrol/Gayle

and gives anderson at least 20 mins, he looks class.

Knowing bruce tho it will be 5 at the back (so 9 behind the ball) hendrick will be in midfield and joelinton up front isolated......

4-0 loss but Bruce will see some positives to take from it.

That's not a great record.

Joelinton to score and cement his place in the strikers hierarchy alongside Andersson.

This is what we need.. No Shelvey & No Hendrick. But knowing Bruce it'll be Hendrick & Shelvey back in..

if we're going 4312 again.. I'll like to see

Dubra
Kraft Lascelles Clark Lewis
Hayden Willock M.Longstaff
Miggy
Joelitnon ASM

but 4-2-3-1 I'll go with your formation.. Gayle instead of Carroll.

I think we'll make 1 change, Hendrick for Gayle. Miggy and ASM as the split forwards with Willock in the Miggy role.

Whilst he's obviously a very defensive manager, I'd be surprised if Bruce plays a false nine formation. Or rather, a formation without a recognised striker.

Don’t think I’ll bother watching, going to be a repeat of the Chelsea game at best.

Joelinton will replace Gayle. Also it wont happen but I'd like to see Hendrick come in for Shelvey.

Kind of what I expected except I would have put in one of the Longstaffs over Shelvey..
