I think it's because of Joelinton's sudden emergence as a box-to-box beast. But even so we still need a quality DM who's comfortable with the ball and I'm sure Kamara ,Zakaria ,Cajuste, etc fit that sort of mould we're looking for. I'll be happy with a Ramsey type player (technically gifted with playmaking skills) & a defensive midfielder who's a combative / aggressive ball winner but also adept at passing & composed on the ball (upgrade on Hayden).Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 7:08 pmI do get the impression we are happy with central midfield, not a lot of concrete interest in that area it seems. Yeah I think Cantwell is seen as a Ritchie/Hendrick replacement.. can play various midfield positions, British, young & wouldn't break the bank too much in terms of a fee (15 - 20 mil) + reasonable wages. One of those signings that won't lit up fans or get us excited but one that's sensible and with a eye towards the future, especially if we're going to be mix and matching between playing 4-4-2/4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1 a player like Cantwell adds flexibility, versatility & squad depth.

Class as he is (when he wants to be), I’m not bothered. I’d have doubts over his desire for a relegation slog and he’ll probably be more committed to playing for Gerrard.

Definitely agree. I also think it's a position we have a few in already, to the extent that Willock is playing far too deep. I'd rather us get another central midfielder in and push him forward (let's not forget he was a £20m+ signing) than do daft things like Coutinho or Dele Alli.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Fri Jan 07, 2022 9:58 amClass as he is (when he wants to be), I’m not bothered. Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na... BOTMAN!
Re: January Transfer Rumours/Wishlist 21/22
This. His best football is played as a attacking midfielder/second striker where he doesn't need to worry too much about any defensive responsibility. He works best in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 I'll say were he has 2 midfielders behind him to take the burden off him.. like a dedicated DM & a no.8 while he can just be the most advanced and licensed to attack. He's OK as a CM/box-to-box but his overall all round midfield play needs to be more polished and disciplined to be in a midfield two or as a box-to-box in a three as he needs to be more tactically aware position wise, defensive astute (tackling, interceptions, ball winning), footballing IQ, playmaking & needs to develop his physicality/strength. The potential is there though as he's only 22 (rough diamond) so if he develops his overall midfield game he'll be a very good - excellent Premier League level midfielder.. right now if we play him should be further forward though as he will learn with experience, development, tactics & coaching on how to become a more all-rounded CM but for now AM/SS is his best position as he can play more freely without worrying too much about tracking further forward or picking up the ball too deep or trying to be a deep-lying playmaker, etc thats not his game he's more a in the box predator making late surging runs & using his energy, pace & finishing in the final third.Colly wrote: ↑Fri Jan 07, 2022 10:01 amDefinitely agree. Still need a technically gifted playmaker who can make us tick (no.8 like a Cabaye type player) & a defensive midfielder like a Tiote/Kante type player.

Cantwell is the kind of player I'd have been happy to go for before the window in that he's young and already has Championship experience.
Seeing Trippier come through the door and hearing some of the other rumours however, I'd far rather take a punt on Ramsey on loan to see if he can stay fit.

Might have to explain to him that every player for Newcastle wears the number 4 this season.

No chance in hell would Fulham sell in January, but would love it if we brought him back. Love it.
