Update: Eddie Howe will be in attendance at the Amex Stadium in the stands rather than the away dugout, but it's assumed that he'll have put pen to paper by then.

Winless in all ten Premier League games this season, Newcastle head to Sussex this evening. Failure to win the game would make this United's worst-ever start to a season, exceeding 1898/99 and 2018/19 when victory came at the eleventh time of asking.

It's a 5.30pm kick-off live on BT Sport and the 3,100 away allocation at the Amex Stadium is sold out.

Graeme Jones will take charge of the Magpies for a third game, revealing in his Friday press call that he played alongside current Brighton boss Graham Potter for Boston United back in 2003.

On the subject of giving way to a permanent boss in the shape of Eddie Howe, he said:

"He’s intense and he’s got exceptional Premier League experience, so if that is the route the club does down, I’m sure he’s more than capable.

"Eddie’s managed 550 games, 200 in the Premier League. He’s 43 years old. He comes with a wealth of experience, knows the league…but it’s not written in stone, there’s been nothing said and confirmed by the football club, so we’ll have to wait and see.

"If it is Eddie, I know he lives for the game and it’s his whole life. If you think you can come to Newcastle and do it part-time you’re mistaken. It requires every ounce you’ve got. But Eddie’s intense and has exceptional Premier League experience. He’s more than capable.”

Asked about the prospect of Howe being in the stands at Brighton on Saturday.

"It could give the players a lift: they would want to impress the new man; that’s human nature. I don’t think it could harm the situation.”

NB: Albion's guidance about COVID status checks infers that all fans are being checked. However that has since been watered down to the random level of checks in place across the PL.

Matchday information is online here with confirmation of the free public transport options available to home and away ticketholders, including free train travel between Haywards Heath and Falmer.

Update: for anyone travelling by train to and from London, be aware that buses replace Southern services between Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport on both Saturday and Sunday. Southern also confirm that they won't run any trains between Three Bridges and Brighton.

The only services to and from Brighton are Thameslink ones, but with a reduced service. That promises to be particularly chaotic after the game, with only an hourly direct train service back from Brighton.

(National Express do run coach services from Brighton to London via Gatwick Airport after the game).

NUFC: Following his return to bench duty last weekend, it's predicted that Martin Dubravka will be recalled to the side.

Paul Dummett remains sidelined.

Matt Ritchie has four bookings to his name and is consequently one yellow card away from serving a one game ban.

Our betting partner Boyle Sports price the game as follows:

Home win @ 6/10
The draw @ 14/5
Away win @ 9/2

Their price boost for new and existing customers for this match is as follows:

Newcastle to score was 8/11 now 6/4

(There's also a boost on their website of over 2.5 goals and a penalty to be scored, up from 3/1 to 4/1).

BHAFC: Danny Welbeck and Steven Alzate remain out while Dan Burn is doubtful.

Graham Potter's Seagulls are winless in their last five PL outings, drawing all but one of those.

On home territory, they began with a 2-0 win over Watford before losing by that margin to Everton. Defeating Leicester City 2-1, they were then held 0-0 by Arsenal before going down 1-4 to Manchester City.

Referee: David Coote - second appointment of the season at a Newcastle game for the Nottinghamshire official, following the 0-2 loss at Aston Villa. That didn't end well.

Funny. 3rd game in a row Newcastle is a main game on TV in Norway. This has never happened before, not even in a whole season <laugh>

It can’t be any worse than our performances against them last season I hope!

Only just down the road from me but at a uni in London with miniOT to sew up a banana (she wants to study medicine) and find out what she should be doing to flesh out her application to uni in a few years time.

Manquillo benched, and Shelvey in. I'm starting to think we might have been wrong about Graeme Jones being the secret mastermind behind last season's survival.

Shelvey has quality , for about five mins in a game. The rest is frustratingly languid and lacklustre.
He’s kind of a metaphor for the team under u know who
Anyway, hope for an honest and front foot performance., that’ll do for starters

I hope we look fitter

Surely if Dubravka was fit enough for the bench last week then he’s fit enough to start this week?! Darlow is alright but Dubravka is clearly number 1.

At least Fraser isn’t being played CM.

Surprised Manquillo dropped as he’s been quite consistent.

Don't mind Manquillo not on the field. I can agree with him being better than his usual self, but watching him breaking 8/10 offside traps makes me want to pull my damn pubes off by hand because I don't have enough on my head. <fist>

Thought Jones was going to stand with his hands in his pockets.
