Apparently been charged with misconduct from the English FA now? No comment from the club at this time.
Disaster if true.

Yeah from August to October apparently, which is when the first ban came into effect. Addiction is a serious thing, and he clearly needs help and support with it. But what an absolute disaster.

Shame as he's clearly a very talented player. But if the issue is as deep as it seems to be, he surely can't have a future in professional sports.

Sympathy for the addiction. Gambling addiction and the collateral damage is horrific.
Bizarrely advertising of alcohol and cigarettes is banned as it’s deemed damaging to health yet gambling is all across football and is incredibly damaging for people with this addiction.
The irony and hypocrisy around dealing with gambling in football is incredible. There must literally be hundreds of players who bet and break or bend the rules laid down by the FA

After that and on topic I cannot help thinking Milan played us here with his acquisition. Imo they got rid of a problem and a fee in return.

All in all a complete fiasco all round

Pretty much this entirely.

People will call him “stupid” but if he has got a serious gambling addiction then you can’t just say “stop”. Add to that he moved to a new country where he knows nobody (other than his Mrs), and he’s been stopped from playing football and will have a lot of free time on his hands…there should be some distinction to players who are proven to have a serious addiction (if he has) and those just doing it for leisure.

Milan must have had a whiff of something, of course that may be almost impossible to prove. Seems very harsh on us tho, as that £55m hits our profit & sustainability and through no fault of our own we're severely hindered by it now.

Was Ashworth involved with this signing?

These are allegedly from BEFORE his current ban, not during as suggested. He was investigated mid to late October. There so far isnt anything to suggest this has happened during his current ban, also this was known about last year and at the time the feeling was it wouldn't add to his current punishment.

Would most likely be served in retrospect ie from date of charges.

So if bet was October it would be from October onwards not from now onwards
I'll Hazard a guess

What happened to Paqueta’s alleged betting, and the guy on loan at Villa?

Think Paqueta is still under investigation.

Zaniolo didn't bet on football only poker and blackjack and on approved sites under Italian law so is ok

It's a real shame as it's a massive problem in society not helped by the environment the sport provides where promotion of risky financial decisions rules. I only the hope the club are supporting him.

In other news, buy some f***ing NFTs and pretend it's 2022.

They lost 99% of their value two years ago and he was being taken to court for using images of the PL trophy without permission. So basically no.

In short no ban extension <diva>

Good to know he just admitted these charges without any evidence that he had breached whilst in England. Brave an honest decision, would have been so easy to keep quiet about it. Hopefully he's turned a corner.

Also interestingly, been reading the FA report, it says had his Italian hearing been held here he would have seen a lesser ban than he's serving, also given examples of similar cases here he could have even had that ban suspended so potentially not had to have missed any games at all.

Still find it odd that the Italians got to decide on a worldwide ban.

Seemed to be a wider issue in Italy with multiple players. And given the history of match fixing in the league they want to be seen to be hard on it. I am generally in favour of long bans for betting on football tbh

It's not the length really that's weird to me, I just thought it would have made sense to ban in Italy and for a ban hearing to be held separately to enforce a PL/FA ban.

The whole betting thing is bizarre in football though considering the well covered argument of how the sport is rife with betting companies yet so heavily punished in comparison to other offences. My biggest concern is when the bets are potential avenues into match fixing. The whole thing is more complex than it seems I think.

As mentioned before match fixing isn't the only issue it's influencing the market

Hard to use risk of punishment to discourage betting if every player could then just move abroad to avoid penalty. Imagine the pressure to clubs if they had to choose between a year of the player suspended or selling at a mark-down price too.

That's why I suggested a separate hearing from the new football association, in this case the FA 👍

I don't really buy into that argument, one bet even if it's 10k or whatever is barely going to change odds when in the grand scheme it's going to be nothing in terms of the volume of bets during the week/weekend. I think the influence these individual bets make is vastly overstated here.
