Rafa didn’t half sign some **** <laugh>
I'd say generally, the club did quite well with transfers under him. Sels, Lazaar, Atsu and Muto are the only ones I can think of as particularly bad value in hindsight.

For reference - the players signed under Rafas tenure (bold still at the club):
Ritchie (10m)
Gayle (10m)
Sels (5m)
Hanley (5m)
Clark (5m)
Yedlin (5m)
Darryl Murphy (1m)
Diame (5m)
Hayden (4m)
Lazaar (3m)
Games (£free)
Jacob Murphy (12m)
Lejeune (9m)
Joselu (5m)
Atsu (6m)
Manquillo (5m)
Merino (10m)
Dubravka (7m)
Slimani (loan)
Kenedy (loan)
Muto (10m)
Rondon (loan)
Almiron (20m)
Ki Sung-Yeung (£free)
Barecca (loan)
Fernández (6m)
Schar (3m)

Harsh on Atsu I feel, not just saying that due to his untimely passing but he done OK for us was a key part of promotion back to PL
I'll Hazard a guess

Sky reporting it as a loan deal with obligation to buy for £28m next season. Got to say I think that's a cracking deal for us. Lad looks like a future England international so 28m in 12 months time is brilliant imo.

Slimani hardly played (not Rafa’s fault), Ki made no impact, can’t even remember Barecca (did he play?!), gamez barely kicked a ball…

Well another failure for me, looks like I'll be relying on Bodacious Bennys' girlfriends' bonus coming through!

Possibly, depends upon a medical! ;)

Got a really good feeling about this lad, last season against Chelsea I remember seeing him on the team sheet and thought we would have an easy ride down their left hand side by the end of the game I thought he was easily Chelsea's best player on the pitch. I think an 18yr old kid who doesn't look out of place in the PL never mind for a team like Chelsea, coming in for under 30m in this climate is an absolute steal.

Feels like we got a good deal, depending on what the "obligation to buy" fee ends up being.

One the one hand, when you shop in the bargain bin you expect a low hit rate. Of the high fee ones Muto, Sels were the only disasters. Murphy was but now isn't.
Fernandez, Lejeune, Hayden, Clark and Yedlin all did decent job. Gayle, Schar, Ritchie and Dubravka were great value (when not Bruce'd)

Although I think some of those cheap fees for older player would have had high wages.

Howe's so cagey I think he'd say that regardless, but I think he'd have had more games if Howe was impressed by him.

Agree on both points. When we've been down to the bare bones on our arses in games he's still rarely come off the bench. He can't be *that bad* surely so you do wonder if there's more to it.

It will be a significant outlay next summer if we do make the deal, so perhaps Howe is thinking that money could be better spent elsewhere if we have Tino who has shown he's very capable of playing left back, Burn, Targett, Trippier to cover the full back positions (and Krafth can play at RB too).

This. I feel like he's not been that impressive and that 35mil could be used for somewhere else which is more of a priority such as finding a long-term successor to Schar, RW upgrade on Miggy, an alternative LB someone similar to Tino (young, fast and technical) and a long term successor to Wilson to compete and rotate with Isak upfront. I feel like he doesn't trust / rate Hall as much as we thought. But we'll see what happens still a lot left in the season so he could still get his time to shine.
