Matchday thread - Toon v Villa
Let's hope we can build on Saturdays' result.
Newcastle return to Premier League action at Villa Park on Tuesday night. The game kicks off at the ungodly hour of 8.15pm for live transmission in the UK via TNT Sport.
Since a 2-1 win in September 2013, United have made six top-flight visits without scoring; playing out successive 0-0 draws before losing each of the next four.
The last Magpie to find the net at Villa Park was Yoan Gouffran in that 2013 visit, since when we've played out 557 scoreless Premier League minutes.
(Not included in that sequence is the 1-1 draw in the 2016/17 Championship season, when our goal was actually an OG registered by a Villan).
Team: Speaking on Monday, Eddie Howe stated that he hoped Miguel Almiron would rejoin the squad after illness, but was less optimistic about injury victim Jamaal Lascelles.
Without giving specific timeframes, he admitted that Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson were the closest to returning, followed by Joe Willock and then Elliot Anderson with others (Matt Targett, Nick Pope, Joelinton) further back.
Bruno Guimaraes is just one yellow card away from reaching 10 in the PL and triggering an automatic two game ban. Anthony Gordon is two bookings short of suffering the same fate.
Tonali rates this game as follows:
NUFC win 27/10
The draw 14/5 4/5
AVFC win 10/11
AVFC: Bertrand Traore is on AFCON duty for Burkina Faso, who face Mali in their last 16 tie on Tuesday.
Ahead of our visit, Unai Emery's side drew 0-0 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup Fourth Round on Friday night.
On home ground this season the Villans are unbeaten in all ten PL games, winning nine and drawing one. 29 home goals scored is the highest total in the PL and eight conceded is the joint lowest with Liverpool.
Referee: John Brooks - second appointment involving Newcastle so far this season, after the 1-2 defeat by Liverpool at SJP when he dismissed Virgil Van Dijk.
Brooks was also in charge of last season's PL visit to Villa by Newcastle.

Stats:
United go looking to end a run of four successive PL defeats: the last time they were beaten five times in the top flight was in December 2020/January 2021.
Away from SJP, Eddie Howe's side have lost each of their last five PL games, since a 2-2 draw at Wolves in October. They've not lost six in a row on the road since the 2015/16 relegation campaign.

Re: Matchday thread - Toon v Villa
Tough game, our record there is absolutely abysmal over the last few years.
Signs of improvement v Man C, and a 'professional' win v Fulham on Saturday hopefully show that we're moving in the right direction but it'll be nice to get this one out of the way and look forward to some winnable fixtures (starting with Luton on Saturday).
Heart says we can get a draw tonight, head says we'll lose 2-0.

Almiron to miraculously recover from his illness and off the bench with a late winner. Cagey 1-0 win.

I'm absolutely positive we'll win tonight and it wouldn't surprise me if it was 3-1. Nearly a month off the ale has given me a new clarity in my predictions......hurrah for alcohol free Guinness
That said I didn't show much clarity when I said I'd do two months off the beer , what an absolute t*** I am.

I only discovered alcohol free Guinness last week and it's not bad at all. The only downside is it takes me 200 cans and £250.00 to get pissed at 00.05%.Bodacious Benny wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:48 amBellend!jimileysbaldhead wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:29 amI'm absolutely positive we'll win tonight and it wouldn't surprise me if it was 3-1. Re: Matchday thread - Toon v Villa
Any sort of win for The Toon please, hell I'd even take a draw if it wiped the smug grin from the face of my Villa supporting neighbour!
2-1 Toon.
2-1 Toon.

Dreading tonight's game tbh

Haven't a clue how tonight will go but generally we seem to suck away from home so will look at a draw as the best we'll get and hope to avoid a drubbing as revenge for the opening day fixture (which seems ages ago)

We'll have to have another injury for Tino to start again, huh? I miss watching his runs and tackling.

A few times this half that the pass out of defence to Gordon is the wrong one as he's got a few players surrounding him. Too risky to lose the ball in those positions
