Matchday thread - Toon v Cherries

Post by UlversToon » Fri Feb 16, 2024 7:39 pm

Let's hope for another convincing win!

Saturday sees Newcastle host the Cherries in the Premier League. It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm start and sold out.

Eddie Howe will look to defeat his former side for the first time in the PL as Magpies boss, having failed to do so in three attempts to date.

Both PL meetings last season ended 1-1, while this season's visit to the Vitality Stadium was a 2-0 win for the hosts. Newcastle did defeat Bournemouth 1-0 at SJP in the Carabao Cup in December 2022.

United are without a victory in their last three PL home games - the last time they went four without claiming maximum points at SJP was the start of the 2021/22 campaign when they were winless in seven.

Team: Callum Wilson is the latest addition to a never-ending injury list, claimed to be out for up to three months with a pectoral injury.

Joe Willock, Alexander Isak and Elliot Anderson are all nearing returns, but it's not anticipated that any of that trio will be involved on Saturday.

Jacob Murphy was on the bench at Forest last weekend but unable to feature after picking up calf injury. He's still to train.

Nick Pope, Joelinton, Matt Targett and Sandro Tonali remain out while the threat of a two-match PL suspension continues to hang over Bruno Guimaraes, who is on nine bookings. Anthony Gordon is two PL yellow cards away from suffering the same fate.

Tonali rates this match as follows:

NUFC win 5/6
The draw 29/10
AFCB win 29/10

AFCB: Philip Billing is suspended and there are fitness doubts over Max Aarons, Tyler Adams, Ryan Fredericks and James Hill.

Ahead of their trip to Tyneside, Andoni Iraola's side were beaten 1-3 at Fulham on Saturday, extending their winless run in the PL to five games.

The Spaniard has occupied the away dugout at SJP previously, bringing his Rayo Vallecano side across to Tyneside for a friendly match in December 2022. The Magpies ran out 2-1 winners.

The Cherries have won four times on the road so far this season: notching up consecutive victories in November and December at Sheffield United (3-1), Crystal Palace (2-0), Manchester United (3-0) and Nottingham Forest (3-2). Draws came at Brentford (2-2) and West Ham (1-1) with the other six away games ending in defeat.

They've scored at least once in all but one of their fourteen league and cup games so far this season.

We're yet to win any, FA Cup defeats at home to Cambridge United and away at Sheffield Wednesday book-ending last season's 0-0 home draw with Crystal Palace in the PL when VAR wrongly denied us a goal.

But I was told we didn't need strengthening because the squad was finally getting healthy and there wouldn't be playing time...*sigh*

Didn’t realise Murphy was injured <urgh>

Barnes has to start then, Miggy on the right, Gordon through the middle.

Midfield picks itself.

Defence under Howe picks itself.

I've actually managed to forage a ticket for the game today, however in the past 6 home league games I've been to we haven't scored. Apologies in advance.

I fancy us to win, Bournemouth aren’t in the great form that they were around Christmas.

Optimist in me says 3-0 win, but honestly - I haven't got a clue what to expect...

Seriously lucky there - any other team bar Sheff Utd and that's 1-0
