Matchday thread - Toon v Wolves
The first of 3 big 6-pointers!
This Saturday sees Newcastle play a third successive PL home game in the non-televised 3pm slot when Wolves travel to St. James' Park.
United are winless in four PL fixtures at SJP since a 3-0 victory over Fulham in December. Defeats to Nottingham Forest (1-3) and Manchester City (2-3) were followed by draws with Luton Town (4-4) and Bournemouth (2-2).
Team: Nick Pope, Joelinton, Callum Wilson, Matt Targett and Sandro Tonali remain sidelined. Sven Botman returns after being rested for Tuesday's FA Cup tie at Blackburn Rovers.
The threat of a two-match PL suspension continues to hang over Bruno Guimaraes, who has been on nine bookings for the last five games. Anthony Gordon is two PL yellows away from suffering the same fate.
Tonali rates this match as follows:
NUFC win 10/11
The draw 11/4
WWFC win 14/5
WWFC: Ahead of their trip to Tyneside, Gary O'Neill's side defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 in the FA Cup Fifth Round on Wednesday night.
That came at some cost though, PL top scorer Hwang Hee-Chan forced off with injury, as was Mario Lemina after netting the winner. The South Korean forward is now confirmed as missing Saturday's game.
Second top scorer Matheus Cunha was previously ruled out until late March with a hamstring problem.
Wolves are unbeaten away from home in six PL and FA Cup games since mid December, winning four and drawing the other two.
PL victories came at Brentford (4-1), Chelsea (4-2) and Spurs (2-1) with a 0-0 draw at Brighton.
The visitors will be backed by a sold-out 3,000 away allocation and wear their red change kit.

Credit to Bruno for staying out of the book for 5 matches. Demonstrates he can be disciplined with enough motivation. Hopefully this can teach him a less to be more preventative before running up against a suspension.

Whens the limit on that yellows ban?

It gets reset at 32 games, so that's a big ask, particularly when you can pick up a yellow by accident very easily these days.

Still a few more games.
Cunha and Hwang out for Wolves (their two top scorers). Should mean they only bang in 2-3 against us!

I'm going for a very nervy 4-1 win showing some of our old form.
Ron McGarry 2 and Albert Bennett 2

My problem is reconciling my gross behaviour with my net income.
Re: Matchday thread - Toon v Wolves
Wouldn't be surprised to see Wolves score given how poor we've been at the back this season - but still confident of a win.

Main thing really was him avoiding the ban when we had no other options. Willock being back and Anderson on his way back means it isn't the disaster it would have been 5 games ago.Timshorts 2 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 7:34 amIt gets reset at 32 games, so that's a big ask, particularly when you can pick up a yellow by accident very easily these days.

The yellow rule this season is a little silly, I don't know why the cut off isn't mid season like normal. The game really is going soft, you get yellows for farting too loud these days. If you want to mess around with the reset point then at least increase the threshold for yellow card offences.

The one match “play Tino in one of the hardest games of the season” experiment is over…
Good to see a strong bench.

Same as always isn't it?Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 2:00 pmThe yellow rule this season is a little silly, I don't know why the cut off isn't mid season like normal. 5 yellows cut off is 19 games, 10 yellows is 32 games. Which is plenty. I'd say his yellows have all been justified as well and he's actually been lucky not to have had more.
