Matchday thread - Toon v Spurs

Post by UlversToon » Sat Apr 13, 2024 6:10 am

European football beckons once again for the mighty Toon.

Next up at Gallowgate is another Saturday lunchtime kick-off, when Spurs provide the opposition in a 12.30pm start on Saturday.

The game is live on TNT Sports.

The last Newcastle goalkeeper to keep a PL clean sheet against the Cockerels at SJP was Shay Given, way back in December 2003. Since then Spurs have netted at least once in all 17 PL visits.

Team: Speaking on Friday, Eddie Howe revealed that Lewis Hall hadn't trained since facing Fulham and was "a slight concern" in terms of facing Spurs.

Howe also confirmed that Joe Willock won't feature, joining Nick Pope, Miggy Almiron, Tino Livramento, Matt Targett, Jamaal Lascelles, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Sven Botman, Lewis Miley and Kieran Trippier on the sidelines.

Of those Livramento is rated the soonest to be back in contention.

Tonali rates this match as follows:

NUFC win 17/10
The draw 29/10
THFC win 13/10

THFC: Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon are both injured. Old boy Fraser Forster also remains out and Richarlison hasn't recovered quickly enough to make the squad for Saturday.

On the road this season, Ange Postecoglou's side have won six times, drawn six times and lost just three (at Wolves, Brighton and Fulham).

Three of their last five away games have ended in score draws and they've scored at least once in all but one of their 15 PL games away from home.

Referee: Tim Robinson - a speedy return to Toon duty for the West Sussex whistler, who oversaw our 3-0 home win over Wolves last month. Before that, Robinson was in charge of the 4-0 success against Palace at Gallowgate and 0-3 loss at Everton.

VAR: Stuart Attwell

UK TV: Live on TNT Sports

UK Radio: Live on talkSPORT

Local Radio: Live on BBC Radio Newcastle

Stats:

United are aiming to extend their record of scoring in every PL home game this season, currently 16 - that's comfortably their best start to a season, exceeding the 13 they kicked off with in 1995/96 and 1996/97.

That figure is within the top five scoring sequences in Newcastle's 552 PL home games to date:

16 1993/94
16 2023/24
18 1995/96 (5) + 1996/97 (13)
18 2002/03 (17) + 2003/04 (1)
24 1994/95 (11) + 1995/96 (13)

Alexander Isak is looking to find the net for the sixth successive PL home game. Ahead of him lie Andy Cole (8 during 1993/94) and Alan Shearer (15 during 1996/97).

2022/23 won 6-1 Murphy 2, Joelinton, Isak 2, Wilson

I really like the idea of this 'sound shirts' they are bringing out for deaf supporters. Not sure how it works, but looks a really great idea. Good to see a different sponsor as well, even if it is a one off.

Suppose the only question is whether that's Krafth or Burn at left back.

Wow. That's like asking who's the least slow out of a slug and a snail.

Looks like it's a three/five at the back with Anderson and Murphy as wingbacks, pushing forward when in possession. Looking positive so far

There’s zero doubt that if it hadn’t been for catastrophic injuries this season we’d be 4th…

This. We're playing brilliantly, Spurs don't know what hit them but there still dangerous if they score one they will have there tails up so it's important we score a third to kill there hope and spirit. I like the set-up.. as someone mentioned looks like a back three with Murphy and Anderson as wing-backs, Bruno n' Longstaff have been good in the middle, while Barnes n' Gordon have been excellent in attack so direct and pacey. Isak is just amazing.. he's definitely our best player currently, rather sell Bruno/Botman (if we have too) than him. What a beautiful striker he has all the qualities you need. Quick, strong, skilful, can link up play really well due to his technical ability and can finish. <awe>
