Matchday thread - Toon v Palace

Post by UlversToon » Wed Apr 24, 2024 7:23 am

Newcastle return to Premier League action on Wednesday against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It's a non-televised, 8pm start.

Team: Joe Willock will play no further part in the remaining games this season, as he recuperates from an achilles problem. A similar decision looks to have been made with back injury victim Lewis Miley.

Callum Wilson has now returned to full training and is set for a place on the bench. He's netted two of our last three goals away to Palace in the PL.

Nick Pope, Miggy Almiron, Matt Targett, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier are still sidelined, Sandro Tonali remains unavailable due to suspension and Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are both long-term absentees with ACL injuries.

The immediate threat of suspension was lifted from Bruno Guimaraes after the 32 game mark was reached against Spurs.

It's still theoretically possible that he could earn a three match ban by reaching 15 bookings, but to do that he'd have to be yellow-carded in all six of our remaining PL games.

Tonali, remember him, rates this match as follows:

NUFC win 13/10
The draw 5/2
CPFC win 2/1

CPFC: Sam Johnstone, Cheick Doucoure, Marc Guehi, Rob Holding and Jefferson Lerma are all sidelined.

Ahead of our visit, the Eagles registered a 5-2 home win over West Ham on Sunday - their largest win of the season. That followed their 1-0 success at Liverpool last week and is the first time they've managed back to back PL wins this season.

On home territory in 2023/24 so far, Oliver Glasner's side have won five, drawn four and lost seven. As yet, they've failed to win consecutive PL matches at Selhurst Park this season.

UK TV: None

UK Radio: None - updates on BBC Radio 5 Live

Referee: Tom Bramall - a third Newcastle game of the season for the Manchester-based whistler and his first away from SJP, following the 2-0 win over Burnley and 4-4 draw with Luton Town.

VAR: Chris Kavanagh

Stats:

Assuming he features, Elliot Anderson will make his 50th senior competitive appearance for United in all competitions (12 starts). He's still to score a goal.

With four away games still to play, Newcastle's tally of 26 PL goals on the road is the seventh highest they've achieved in 29 seasons of playing in that competition:

2001/02 scored 34 (19 away games)
2022/23 scored 32 (19 away games)
1993/94 scored 31 (21 away games)
1995/96 scored 28 (19 away games)
2002/03 scored 27 (19 away games)
2011/12 scored 27 (19 away games)
2023/24 scored 26 (15 away games)

Since Christian Benteke beat Karl Darlow at Selhurst Park in October 2021, Palace have failed to score a goal against United in all five league and cup meetings - a run of 484 minutes without conceding.

Magpies v Eagles @ Selhurst - all time:

2022/23 drew 0-0
2021/22 drew 1-1 Wilson
2020/21 won 2-0 Wilson, Joelinton
2019/20 lost 0-1
2018/19 drew 0-0
2017/18 drew 1-1 Diame
2015/16 lost 1-5 Cisse
2014/15 drew 1-1 Cisse
2014/15 won 3-2 (aet) Riviere 2, Dummett (LC)
2013/14 won 3-0 Cabaye, og(Gabbidon), Ben Arfa
2009/10 won 2-0 Nolan, Ryan Taylor
2004/05 won 2-0 Kluivert, Bellamy

Dear Sheffield United.

Unlike most people, I don't think you're that s***. Prove them wrong tonight.

Dear Sheffield United,

Unlike most people, i think you're s*** - but only most of the time. Maybe have one game on one game off. Be absolute unplayable bastards tonight, but then revert to being s*** at the weekend.

I've brought Harry Maguire into my draft team simply for their upcoming fixtures, so 0-0 would be fine. Or a 4-3 loss where he gets a hat trick.

I've had a nailed on double on tonight's games, us and Sheffield Utd to win 3-1. I just hope we don't f*** it up :)
My problem is reconciling my gross behaviour with my net income.

wtf is actually wrong with trippier? Apparently he was close a few weeks back and even arrived with the squad in full tracksuit before one match, but he still can’t even make the bench.

I wondered this...

Maybe with the end of the season in sight they're exercising more caution a la Willock/Miley.

Barnes needs to stop trying the little cute things and just have a strike. He's brilliant and doing good things, but he'd be far more productive.

Not since I've tuned in... we've looked awful. Slow, constantly giving the ball away, can't string any passes together... just s**** and frustrating to watch.
