Matchday thread - Toon v Blades

Post by UlversToon » Fri Apr 26, 2024 6:56 pm

Posting early as I'll be travelling over in the morning. :)

Newcastle's penultimate PL home game of the season sees them host the Blades on Saturday.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm kick-off, with the visitors selling their entire 3,204 allocation.

Chris Wilder's side need to avoid defeat to prolong their relegation fight, although a draw would leave them needing a mathematic miracle, or Nottingham Forest having their points deduction increased after appeal.

Team: Nick Pope, Miggy Almiron, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier are still sidelined but could yet play some part in our remaining games.

Speaking on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Miggy could be in contention to face Burnley.

Joe Willock, Lewis Miley, Matt Targett, Sandro Tonali, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles won't feature again this season.

Tonali rates this match as follows:

NUFC win 2/9
The draw 11/2
SUFC win 12/1

SUFC: Max Lowe, Chris Basham, John Egan, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Daniel Jebbison, Tom Davies and George Baldock remain unavailable, with Oli McBurnie the latest addition to that list.

Jayden Bogle and James McAtee are both doubtful.

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, Wilder's side lost 2-4 at Old Trafford in the PL on Wednesday night - their thirteenth loss away from Bramall Lane this season.

The Blades have won one away game - 3-1 at Luton Town - and drawn three: 1-1 at both Brighton and Villa and 2-2 at Bournemouth. From that you can deduce that they've failed to keep a clean sheet on the road.

Referee: Tony Harrington - a swift return to SJP for the Teesside-based official, who took charge of the recent 1-1 home draw with Everton.

VAR: Andy Madley

UK TV: none

Stats:

Following a 8-0 win at Bramall Lane in the first meeting of the two sides, Newcastle are bidding to wrap up their third win double of the season after taking six points off both Aston Villa and Fulham.

Blades in Toon - last 10:

2020/21 won 1-0 Willock
2019/20 won 3-0 Saint-Maximin, Ritchie, Joelinton
2009/10 won 2-1 Lovenkrands, Nolan
2006/07 lost 0-1
1999/00 won 4-1 Shearer, Dabizas, Ferguson, Gallacher (FAC)
1993/94 won 4-0 Beardsley 2, OG, Cole
1989/90 won 2-0 Gallacher, Quinn
1988/89 won 2-0 Hendrie, Mirandinha (LC)
1985/86 drew 1-1 Cunningham (FR)
1978/79 lost 1-3 Shoulder

Defo won’t be setting up to play on the counter on this one, you’d think!

Sorry but I just brought Schar into my FPL team so Sheffield Utd definitely score…

Murphy and Longstaff shouldn't start a single game next season unless it's the league cup or an injury crisis. I struggle to think of anyone in the top 15 of the PL that would have them as regular starters.

Also probably an unpopular opinion but I think Anderson won't ever offer much more for us, I think he's another bottom half/upper championship level player at best. Next season if we keep hold of key players our Cm options would be Bruno, Tonali, Joelinton, Willock, Miley. I think we need to add a specialist CDM to that, but overall I just can't see where Anderson and Longstaff fit in that group.

Sheff Utd still look a threat every time they go forward...
